Academy Books and Records has been selling rare books and records since 1995.
RECORD: The "Loop" by John Cale was the first release of the Velvet Underground, and very rare, since Aspen magazine had a limited distribution. The flexi has a closed final grove so that it plays in a continuous loop.
CONDITION OF RECORD: NM.
MAGAZINE: Aspen was a three dimensional multimedia "magazine" in a box, significant as a nexus for the 1960s avant-garde: writers, dancers, composers, filmmakers, and musicians. Aspen Magazine was a created by Phyllis Johnson, published on an irregular schedule between 1965 and 1971. Each issue was a graphic box containing various unusual elements. "This issue, created and curated by Andy Warhol, is widely considered the most desirable of the magazine's run, because of the inclusion of the Velvet Underground flexi-disc, the first of the band's commercially available recordings. Scarce and truly unique.
CONDITION OF MAGAZINE: The box has some light wear and rubbing at corners but still a very near fine copy. One section is missing: the "Ten-Trip Ticket Book with LSD theme".
CONTENTS. 1. The hinged box designed to look like a FAB detergent box. 2. Pictorial Press Kit Folder titled "Music, Man, That's Where It's At!" containing three stapled essays on various colored papers: 3. "Life Among the Poobahs," by Lou Reed. 4. "Orpheus Plugs In," by Robert Shelton. 5. "The View From the Dance Floor," by Bob Chamberlain. 6. Un-used Flexi-Disc of "Loop" by the Velvet Underground & "White Wind" by Peter Walker . 7. Multi-page Season's Greetings Card. 8. Die-cut folder with 12 Pop Art Paintings by Jasper Johns, Claes Oldenburg, Roy Lichtenstein, Andy Warhol, Larry Poons, Bridget Riley and Willem De Kooning, and et al. 9. Double-sided Underground Movie Flip Book of Andy Warhol's "Kiss" & Jack Smith's "Buzzards over Bagdad." 10. Ten Trip Ticket Book with LSD theme [THIS ":SECTION" IS MISSING]. 11. Folding newspaper "The Plastic Exploding Inevitable." All five advertisements are present (Folk Music on Vanguard; Folding Newsprint Poster for FWP Advertising, Paraphernalia, Guild Musical Instruments, and the Aspen subscription form).
