N.B. please read carefully:
1. Delivery from South Africa can sometimes take up to 6 weeks. Your package can take even longer
to reach you if it is delayed in Customs in your country. We will gladly provide proof of postage and
information about when your parcel left South Africa. However, we have no control over delivery times.
Please contact us first if you are concerned about the whereabouts of your parcel.
2. Please do not send payment before you receive an invoice from us!
3. Please note that this item ships from Cape Town, South Africa. Shipping is therefore NOT as stated
by ebay:
**worldwide shipping for this item via Registered Airmail
is GBP 13.50**
4. I grade conservatively. Grading for vinyl is VG- / VG / VG+ / VG++ / NM and sealed.
I do not use “EX”, but my equivalent grade is VG++.
I only offer trashed or unplayable records for auction if they are exceptionally rare.
5. Customers should be aware that funds paid into PayPal can take up to one week to clear through
the South African banking system. Since I am not a business with the money in hand to ship items right away,
I can therefore only post items once I am able to draw PayPal payments as cash on this end from my local bank.
However, goods are shipped immediately once payment has been cleared and withdrawn as cash. Please keep this
in mind when leaving feedback.
Assagai “Assagai” rare original UK Vertigo Swirl first press LP 6360 030
1Y/2Y, Afrobeat, Rock, Funk / Soul
cat # 6360 030, 6360030, Vertigo, UK, 1971
Released on the Vertigo "large swirl" label in a matt gatefold sleeve.
Cat# - 6360 030 appears on B-side label.
Cat# - 6360030 appears on spine and top right rear of sleeve above VO Price Code.
Matrix / Runout (A-side runout stamped): 6 3 6 00 30 1 Y * 1 1 1 1
Matrix / Runout (B-side runout stamped): 6 3 6 00 30 2 Y * 1 1 1
Boxed below the Cat.No. on rear of sleeve: “VO PRICE CODE” (please see photo)
Visually (under bright light): the record has numerous sleeve-removal-type scuff marks,
as well as several light scratches, including some lightly feelable scratches on both sides of
the LP (i.e. lightly feelable with the tip of one's fingernail.) There are several spindle marks on
both labels. Visually, I would grade the record as Very Good only. However, the LP plays
better than its visual appearance would suggest (please see audio grading below.)
Audio:
SIDE A (description of flaws and individual gradings of songs):
Crackle at the start of, and a short way into, the first track. Crackle, too, at the very end of
the first song when it fades out, and in between songs 1 and 2. The first song grades between
VG+ and VG++ overall.
Song 2 has some occasional soft non-intrusive ‘clicks’ in places. Some crackle can be heard
in the interval between songs 2 and 3, and a very short way into the third song. The second
song grades between VG+ and VG++ overall.
The third song plays with touches of occasional very minor surface noise here and there, but the
music still takes centre stage. Some crackle can be heard in between songs 3 and 4. The third song
grades between VG+ and VG++ overall.
Two consecutive soft ‘pops’ on Song 4, about half-way through the song. Some brief crackle and
two quick soft ‘clicks’ in succession at the very end of the song when it fades. The fourth song grades
between VG+ and VG++ overall.
Summary: Although crackle is present in between tracks and a short way into some tracks,
Side A plays well and is still a very enjoyable listen since, for the most part, the music is to the forefront.
Evidence of wear, for example, in the form of crackle between tracks and at the start of some songs,
does not spoil the listening experience. Significantly, there is no distortion, so everything is perfectly
clear despite the flaws noted above. Although play is frequently VG++ on Side A, I would grade
the songs on side A between VG+ and VG++ overall, with imperfections as described above.
SIDE B (description of flaws and individual gradings of songs):
Crackle at the start of track one, and crackle and ‘tics’ are also present in various places on this track.
It is nothing that overwhelms the music though: there is just slightly more evidence of wear. The track
is still an enjoyable listen. Since wear is more audible on this track, the first song on Side B grades between
VG and VG+ only. Crackle at the end of track one, and at the start of track two.
Crackle a short way into track 2. Track 2 has some soft crackle here and there, and a few non-intrusive
‘clicks’. Although play is mostly VG++ when the song gets going / for the remaining two thirds of the song,
I would grade song 2 between VG and VG++ . Grades as VG+ overall. Crackle at the end of the second
song and between songs 2 and 3.
Song 3 grades mostly as VG++. Some brief surface noise at the very end of this track.
Song 4 grades mostly as VG++. A ‘click’ at the very end of the song.
Summary: As with Side A, the songs on Side B are a very enjoyable listen. However, in comparison with
Side A, there is a slight dip in quality when it comes to the first song on Side B -- and to the first third or so
of the second song on Side B -- since a little more surface noise is evident in these sections of the record.
As indicated, the second song on Side B is something of a mixed bag though, since the remaining two
thirds of the song play-grade closer to VG++ and sound better than the first third. For the remaining
two thirds of the second song -- and especially for songs 3 and 4 -- the music is generally well to the forefront.
Imperfections for all four songs on Side B as noted above. Again, as with Side A, there is no distortion on
this side.
A USED record. Not for the fussy collector, but still fully playable and enjoyable despite being pre-enjoyed,
with flaws as outlined above.
The record plays right through on both sides without ‘sticks’, ‘skips’ or ‘jumps’.
I would grade the cover as Fair or Acceptable. It has noticeable edge wear and corner wear.
There are markings, including a circular marking to the front of the cover. There is a tear to the front
left hand side of the cover. Scratches, dirt, and ‘rubbing’. Some edge wear and 'feathering' to the
opening. Despite such flaws and its worn appearance, the cover is still intact (there are no seam splits)
and is fully functional. The images on the inside of the gatefold cover look fine. No writing or stickers.
Please see photos.
The inner sleeve is creased, yellowing, has a stamp. It is still functional and grades as Fair at best.
