Description

I had this 8x10 signed by Carcass on September 19th, 1992. Napalm Death, Carcass, and Cathedral were touring together; they were playing that night at the Peppermint Beach Club in Virginia Beach. In the afternoon, there was a low-key and poorly promoted in-store appearance at The Record Exchange in Norfolk, VA (the event was similar to the story that you can read about in my Exodus eBay listing). Watch the scene in Spinal Tap where they are in a store signing copies of “Smell the Glove”; that’s kind of what it was like. It was basically just me and my friends, a VERY small group of other fans, and people shopping in the store who had no idea who the bands were. There were representative members of every band there, but no complete band line-ups. We all got our things signed by everyone in just a few short minutes. While I was there I pulled the promotional 8x10s of each band off of the walls of the store and got those signed as well (NOTE: any band members that weren’t at the store I met later that night before and after the show; that’s how I got everyone’s signatures). When the guys were finished signing things, they killed time by shopping in the store and chatting with us. I noticed that Mike Amott was buying the KISS solo albums on CD and we talked at length about our love of KISS. I also found out that Barney and I shared a mutual affinity for Minor Threat. We met up with everyone before the show, at the club, and talked more. There were more people who came to the show, but it still wasn’t a big crowd. The area was never very receptive to this kind of music, especially around this time when alternative/grunge was hitting it big in the States. It must be strange for metal bands to play huge concerts in Europe and South America and then come to the U.S. and play for a crowd of 50-100 people. I can tell you, from experience, that nothing is worse than stage diving into a crowd that is only one or two rows deep. I had many injuries to prove it. I will say that, the next night, my friends and I traveled north to the show at the old 9:30 Club, in Washington D.C., and it was a sell-out crowd. This 8x10 glossy is signed by Mike Amott, Bill Steer, Jeff Walker, and Ken Owen. The pictures shown here are of Mike Amott, Bill Steer, Mark Griffiths, Jeff Walker, and Mark “Barney” Greenway. You can contact me if you have any questions.
