It was the music of the American Negro, most of it, and almost everyone who hears it now will unfortunately be incapacitated by his education and socialization towards a kind of deafness, not of the hear, but of the mind, the body. Songs, then, supplemental to the lives of people (a People) who could still make something, then; now are crossed in relevance, misinterpreted, and ignored--quite naturally--by a society which long ago proved conclusively that it was incapable of making anything. Make, Here, in the sense both of power to create and tenderness to seduce. Accross the cultural impoverishment spreads the butter of money: if you don't know it, you can buy it. The reverse process holds: butter, the best lubricant in the world, draws flies. These and similar understandings encapsulate Firk's music. Of heritage, little may be supposed beyond what you the reader could adduce yourself. One Should Be warned, however: though Firk sounds like the old and legendary musicians he seems to emulate, to seed out all possible variables from bibliographical and discographical attempts (many failures we have seen here and there) and theories of ethnomusicologiests (and their dreams), we perhaps--just perhaps--although the songs he seems to play resembles songs he seems to play resemble songs we think we know and think he's playing, these songs are not always the ones we think there are. There is the nuance of comment in the voice, food, instrument, which reminds us of someone else; and to understand this, truly is to understand that we will never know who that Someone Else was. No one knows Firk and no one knows his music, although we have heard it before, every piece..."
