Label Conditions: Both immaculate, ultra clean, fresh and attractive with hardly any traces of spindle marks. Both record and cover are of the highest quality and look stunning, the sound is the same. The very best example of this classic prog-rock album I have seen or heard in many years.

Brief Artist & Album Info: Formed by Tony Kaye after he left Yes, this progressive album follows in a similar vein. A somewhat unusual debut in-as-much it’s a full live recording that was performed at the Rainbow Theatre London. The decision was made when they were scheduled to support Yes. The rehearsals went so well, it was considered their real energy was best captured live and so this album came to be. They became a popular support act to the likes of Black Sabbath and the some material was written around the time of the second Yes album. This is an excellent set with six lengthy progressive songs with (unsurprisingly) a distinct hint of the Yes sound. The sleeve has to be one of the very best that features the distinctive artwork of Roger Dean and also it has a gatefold pop-up feature similar in style to the Jethro Tull ‘Stand Up’ album, but this time, yes you guessed it, a Badger as seen in detail in my close-up pictures. A double sided, beautifully designed cut-out working part, fragile but fully intact and pristine, working perfectly neatly opening and closing. An all-round stunning copy in very close to archive condition and the record plays little short of perfectly. As a band, they were not around very long which is something of a surprise as this album is a real gem. For progressive rock fans, this is unmissable and the cover one of the most beautiful Roger Dean ever designed. A rare opportunity like this.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(++): arguably better. An unlaminated gatefold format with matt smooth surfaces. The original pop-up Badger is included and is fully intact, pops up and folds perfectly when opened and closed respectively. Made in England by Robor Ltd. Includes the plain white inner sleeve.

Cover Front: A beautiful graphic in the classic Roger Dean style, this collectable in its own right. This has been cover-protected by the one owner and the front remains fresh, clean and highly attractive with barely anything to fault . Any rub traces or blemishes tiny, few and faint, and barely a crease to be seen. One often ruined by sticker marks, pulls or tears, no such issues on this one.

Cover Back: Again in very similar condition, the lack of ring wear always a plus on such covers. Also both sides are unfaded with strong colour.

Cover Inner Gatefold: Firstly, the Badger pop-up feature, this is mint as made, totally uncreased or damaged as clearly seen in the pictures. It folds perfectly and has been positioned perfectly central in manufacture. The inside again clean and fresh with little to fault, one very small surface pull near the bottom right edge the only small blemish to what is an outstanding cover.

Top Edges: Both straight, flat, and near flush with barely any trace of rubbing.

Bottom Edges: Again straight and neat, any traces of rubbing to these storage edges patchy and very light.

Right Edge(s), and Type: The front has a real folded and tucked edge, this practically unworn again. The back opening edges are clean and still very sharp with barely any thickening and guaranteed untrimmed.

Spine and Text: As near perfect as any spine will be. Solid, quite thick, straight, clean and folded close to square. So all edges meet up virtually flush and near parallel. Barely any rubbing, no fading or compression. All text present and strong, also nicely centred, the graphic again with no fading. Even the fold hinges are unscuffed and retain full ink retention.

Corners: Any tip rubbing or creasing tiny and very light, the spine pair have barely even a trace of rubbing at all. Better than excellent shape is retained.

Cover Summary: A superb all-round example of this fragile and highly attractive 1970’s cover, one that will prove difficult to find much better. One of my personal favourite Roger Dean covers, and when found looking like this, a joy to hold and view. The cover-protection means this has barely aged or worn and should please many, if not most collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(+): a basic unlined plain white inner with just a crease to one corner. Little else to fault, the paper clean and still fresh and all edges unsplit with no repairs.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: NEAR MINT: and clearly barely even played. A superb visual copy to match its cover and is very clean with equally fine shine and solidly pressed. Any surface traces few, ultra light and faint as seen critically under bright light. No penetrating stylus scratches, viewed in average room light, barely anything even registers. Visually a super record that should please most collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing equipment, all listed further down.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This quality prog-rock album plays to it’s high visual grading with barely anything to fault. Offering strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear – sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds barely even registered and this is an exceptional clean pressing with no tracking issues* or inherent pressing noises. Few available copies will match or outperform this early first pressing. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly – evidence suggests barely at all – and has been very carefully stored and handled within a non-smoking environment. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. It will prove very difficult to find better and can be strongly recommended. Few available copies will match this fantastic all-round example..

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2 grams. Records are a ‘contact’ format, and few will avoid the odd minor sound blemish.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.
