BAKERLOO Same UK no EMI on the labels

Welcome! Here is a first UK press of Bakerloo (Harvest SHVL 762). Bakerloo were Dave ‘Clem’ Clempson, Terry Poole, and Keith Baker. This is a fabulous example of their 1969 progressive blues rock recording, now recognized as one of the classic Harvest albums. All the right stuff is here – a laminated gatefold E. J. Day sleeve, Harvest labels without the EMI logo, and the illustrated Harvest inner sleeve.

Matrix numbers and mother/stamper codes are:

Using the Record Collector grading system, what do we have here?

Sleeve: For me, Bakerloo has one of the very best sleeve designs of all the Harvest albums. This example is truly spectacular, with the only detraction a crease across the lower right corner of the front, noticeable only if you hold the cover at a certain angle. Other than that, wow! The spine and corners are superb. I had another copy of this album many years ago, and that one exhibited significant toning to the white border of the entire sleeve. Not this one! White as snow! And the mostly white inside gatefold is extremely nice, with only very faint traces of soiling. The sleeve is signed “Printed and made by Ernest J. Day & Co. Ltd. London.” Without that corner crease, I’d call this sleeve M-, but let’s say Excellent. Still, I cannot believe that you would EVER find a nicer one.

Vinyl: The nice, heavy Harvest vinyl grades Excellent, with just occasional, minor low-level crackle, mainly at the beginning of Side 2. There are only a couple of marks on the vinyl, which do not affect play. You will not be disappointed!

Labels: Both labels are strong, with average spindle tracking on both labels. Again, these labels do NOT have the EMI logo (yay!).

Inner Sleeve: This album has its original plastic-lined Harvest inner sleeve, which is in nice shape, with no splits and only minor age discoloration around the edges. There is one crease through it, but I consider this negligible. The plastic lining remains firmly attached to the paper.

And, in the end: I used to look at those illustrated Harvest inner sleeves and wonder what Bakerloo sounded like; no one I knew had ever heard of them, let alone HEARD them. Well! This is a terrific example of a pre-EMI Bakerloo. (Actually, this album might have been deleted by the time Harvest began putting EMI on its labels; does anyone know?)
