Description
Columbia Viva-tonal Electrical Process 78 rpm record. Numbers in trail off are 146051 and 146054. Blues vocal with guitar accompaniment by Robert Hicks of Walnut Grove, GA. He is only referred to as Barbecue Bob on the record. Evidently he is credited with writing the Waycross Georgia Blues. The record has considerable gloss and it does not appear to have been played, or at least not very much, using a steel needle. I played it multiple times and the sound quality is excellent as is the volume.
It does have problems. Most importantly, there is a crack in one side of the record extending from far side of the label across the record to outside edge. That crack creates light pops that are not intrusive. I have played the record many times and handled it making photos and I dont consider it in danger of breaking or changing if reasonable care is used. There are light pops as the needle passes over the crack but very much in background. That same crack is barely visible on the flip side and creates no noise. But there is another issue on that same side. (Chocolate to Bone.) There is a scratch in the last 20 seconds or so that makes loud pops; the only ones that stand-out on the entire disc. It has never skipped or repeated while playing that section or on the entire record.
I tried to show it's true condition but it is not easy photographing records.
I am not a record dealer but 85 years old and getting rid of my records. I am not much on grading but will say that my estimate of a grade for this record is at least VG, probably VG+. I am impressed with the fidelity, if I can use that word describing a 78 rpm record. And except for the scratched section, background noise is perfectly acceptable.
