It has been five years since Richard Barbieri bestowed an album on us. Five very long years, to say the least. Bruised, battered, exhausted and, frankly, a little bit scared, nevertheless we're not out yet and, as Hauntings proves, it turns out our resilience has reaped some rewards. And fitting ones at that. Barbieri's strange world is one of jazz and synthesisers, as much an exercise in artistic sound design as it is music making per se. This is all clear on Hauntings, a record that uses those stylistic tendencies as foundational parts of pensive and tense arrangements. At times, slightly unnerving, in other moments, truly atmospherically immersive. Another lost film score looking for a movie, perhaps.
