BAXTER'S GLASS EYE - test pressing ONLY KNOWN COPY unreleased LP PSYCH FUZZ 1969 --- RAW HEAVY Philly garage psych proto-prog/doom!!! LISTEN
Baxter's Glass Eye were a psych-garage band from the Philadelphia area who existed 1968-1971. They played with many of the regional bands and opened psych shows with national acts who played the city. The band's name is derived from a Mark Twain character named Flora Baxter, a girl who would freak people out by removing her glass eye. The band recorded a single 45 ("Cynthia") which does not appear ever to have been released, but two known test pressings of which have come to auction in the past 7 years, selling the second time for nearly $200. The A-side does not appear on this test pressing, although a version of the B-side does.
This is the only known copy of an unreleased 9 song, 40+ minutes LP test pressing. All 9 songs are originals, 7 have vocals. All tracks feature RAW, LOUD guitar & copious amounts of keyboard. It sounds like this was a typical American garage band that went in a dark, psych/proto-prog direction by way of having listened to a lot of The Doors and... Blue Cheer?! That's what I'd say, although you can hear a number of contemporary influences ... a band halfway between those two with some proto-doom and goth-long-before-that-had-a-name overtones.
Is this the only copy of the record on the planet? Probably, unless a band member has one in their basement. This is likely the first opportunity to hear these tracks in almost 50 years. It's the only copy for sale certainly, and does not appear in auction records. I collect psych & other rock, I live in Philadelphia, I've been crate digging for over 30 yrs & this is the only copy I've ever seen or even heard of... and this one was tucked in a cover of a commercially released jazz album, with that album missing.
A bit of popping between tracks & in the softest passages; no skips. Needs a good wet cleaning but even in current state plays at what I'd call high VG/ low VG+.
I've stuck several not great bit rate mp3 samples in a row in a YouTube video here; it should sound better for you at home:
