DESCRIPTION:
First time on eBay..Benjamin Britten – Coventry Cathedral Festival (Consecration). The First Performance of War Requiem. X2 BBC Transcription discs. Recorded live in May 1962. I can find no information on this particular pressing. As with many transcription service discs from the BBC they came with an expiry date – In this case 1965. A rare and important performance certainly – The first performance and very first pressing.
The concert itself was of course well reviewed - some excerpts.
The War Requiem, first performed on 30 May 1962, was commissioned to mark the consecration of the new Coventry Cathedral, which was built after the original 14th-century structure was destroyed in a World War II bombing raid. The reconsecration was an occasion for an arts festival
“A magnificent performance last night, in which the cathedral revealed itself as acoustically much better for music on this scale than it had promised at rehearsal, with no audience to absorb the resonance. Heather Harper, Peter Pears and Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau were all three superb in the solo parts, and the Festival Choir fully redeemed itself after its unsatisfactory performance in the Bliss last week. The excellent orchestra was the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, and Meredith Davies was the masterly conductor, with the composer as assistant conductor for the sections with chamber ensemble, which were finely played by the Melos Ensemble.”
It is impossible here even to list, let alone describe all the striking musical ideas in the work. Every movement brings several new ones, particularly the "Sanctus," which is rather like the "Cantata Academica" in miniature, every line a marvelous new short movement

Poly lined BBC transcription sleeves are fully intact and present well – Small cat no in pen top right = Very Good Plus (VG+ )
Records
The records under bight magnified light display a nice luster, ultra-light paper chaffing evident, Side 1 = EX side 2 = Ex Side 3 has some hairlines = VG side 4 = EX. The transcription labels display well showing very little signs of use to the spindle holes.
Packaging:
Records within the inner sleeve will be removed from the cover and sandwiched between professional card stiffeners then inserted into a protective plastic sleeve. This package is then placed within a professional cruciform record mailer (N.B: We do not use cheap mailers)
