THE BEATLES 1966 LP

YESTERDAY...AND TODAY

CAPITOL RECORDS # T-2553

O.K., warm up your steam irons! It's here!

"Yesterday...and Today was the last Beatles album to be created exclusively for the American market without the group's direct consent, and its tumultuous history seemed to bring the issue of those albums to a head, both for the group and Capitol Records. Owing to business and market differences between England and America, the label had reconfigured every one of the group's long-players in America up to that point, and also generated a few LPs out of singles, B-sides, and EP tracks that had no U.K. equivalent on 12" vinyl — the Beatles had tolerated it all quietly in the early days, content to go along amid the whirlwind of success they were riding, even in the face of such abominations as the original U.S. Help! album. By 1966, however, they were on a firmer footing, and well past being wide-eyed teenagers from the north of England; they'd also begun to express themselves creatively in media beyond music, and take themselves a bit more seriously, and having a bit more fun as well — by the spring of 1966, after all, they were neck-deep into the making of the Revolver album. When confronted with what should have been a routine matter, the proposed 11-song U.S.-only Yesterday...and Today, assembling a bunch of single sides and leftover U.K. LP tracks, they delivered the notorious "butcher cover," depicting the quartet in butcher smocks, handling cuts of meat and pieces of dismembered baby dolls — it was all their comment on how strangely albums like this one seemed to chop up pieces of their history and repertory. Somehow, Capitol Records' executives went along with gag and approved the initial design, and a print run of the album was ordered up, anticipating the usual six-figure release-date demand for a "new" Beatles LP. Then the negative reactions started coming in from record chain buyers and disc jockeys, and Capitol was soon faced with a crisis — everybody seemed to find the cover tasteless and even grotesque, and it was possible some department store chains would refuse to stock the album. A new, tamer photo replaced the original cover, and untold thousands of copies of the original "butcher cover" sleeves were pasted over with the new picture. In the end, between the junking of artwork and some jackets, and the overtime needed to salvage the inventory, Yesterday...and Today ended up as the only U.S. Beatles album to show a loss on Capitol's books. From that point forward, there would be better coordination between England and America to prevent such near-disasters. As for the album itself, Capitol assembled four songs that had been removed from the British version of Rubber Soul, the singles "Yesterday," "We Can Work It Out," and "Day Tripper," a pair of B-sides, and offered a "preview" of the upcoming Revolver album (released seven weeks later) in the form of "And Your Bird Can Sing" and "Doctor Robert" (neither one in its final mix). Amazingly, despite origins ranging across 18 months of the band's history, it all hung together very well, with the country-influenced "Act Naturally" and "What Goes On" — both heavily featuring Ringo Starr — adding some unexpected roots rock elements amid the cutting-edge, riff-driven glories of "Day Tripper" and others, and the latter contrasting beautifully with McCartney's romantic classic "Yesterday." Despite being thrown together in a blender, the album could stand next to almost any of the competition in the summer of 1966, though it became clear with the release of Revolver, two months later, that the band had left most of the sounds represented here far behind them."

DRIVE MY CAR - I'M ONLY SLEEPING

NOWHERE MAN - DR. ROBERT - YESTERDAY

ACT NATURALLY - AND YOUR BIRD CAN SING

IF I NEEDED SOMEONE - WE CAN WORK IT OUT

WHAT GOES ON? - DAY TRIPPER

This album is the original rainbow Capitol label with the black backround. It might be a first pressing, who knows? The top edge of the cover has the "FILE UNDER: THE BEATLES". There are marks from 2 small pieces of scotch tape on the front and a 1-inch long portion of cover paper missing where the song titles are on the front. It is generally worn with some ringwear. There is edge wear and the spine has been repaired with clear glue. There are no splits, no holes, no rips. The cover is sturdy and solid. The back cover has the RIAA seal in the corner with a "6" next to it. There is another tape mark on the back cover, along with some ringwear and general wear. See the photos. I have graded this VG+ for the vinyl. It has a lot of static and is quite noisy but there are no skips or pops and both sides played without stalls. The cover is VG+ and because it is intact and sturdy. That is one step up from my lowest grade, so no complaining, O.K.? This album is still collectable and if you don't mind the static, quite a nice listen for the price. Go For It!

This LP Record Set was cleaned using the

VPI HW-16.5 VACUUM TUBE CLEANER!

The HW-16.5 is the standard in record cleaning machines, neither its build quality nor its cleaning power has ever been surpassed! Its high-torque, 18 RPM turntable motor is capable of standing the pressure of heavy scrubbing during long cleaning sessions, and its 35-second cleaning cycle makes quick work out of even the dirtiest records! The improved 16.5 model has the new self-aligning vacuum suction tube for even more accurate cleaning! I now clean all of my records that are NOT Factory Sealed with the VPI, then test listen to the vinyl, then clean the record again with the VPI. This baby costs me hundreds of dollars, but My Customers Deserve THE BEST!!!

GRADING SCALE

I use a Universal Grading System to describe the quality of the LP albums and 45 singles that I sell. I grade records under strong, diffused room light or discreet sunlight. I do not use stock photos for my ads; all of my scans are of the Item You See! You get no surprises from me!

NOTE: Please keep in mind that when I describe any LP, I am referring to its Original Year Of Release, NOT the year that the LP was printed! In many cases, the year that a given LP was printed is unknown. When in doubt, PLEASE ASK me! Thank You!

All of my LP’s are stored upright in a SMOKE-FREE ENVIRONMENT!

  • SS Mint (M): Album is New, Still Sealed and has never been played.
  • Mint (M): The vinyl has no noticeable scratches, fingerprints or defects and looks like it has never been played, although there may be use at the spindle hole. The cover has no noticeable wear or defects. There may be very slight curling of the right side corners of the cover due to shrink wrap pressure. May still have it’s original shrink wrap. MINT does not mean "perfect".
  • Near Mint (NM): Almost Mint vinyl with perhaps a few visual imperfections that should not affect the sound of the record. Cover is nice looking with little or no ring wear and may still have its original shrink wrap.
  • VG++: Vinyl has some signs of wear; very clean, only light surface marks which will not distract significantly from the sound, but perhaps a little static, some snaps or pops. Cover may have some signs of wear, perhaps some ringwear but is still in nice collectible condition, solid with no cuts, holes or splits.
  • VG+: Played often with moderate surface wear and some moderate noise, static, pops or skips - still plays well. Cover may have significant overall wear and ring wear.
  • VG: Overall wear, more noisy sound during quiet passages, a lot of static and many skips that require lifting the needle. Cover is well worn, usually with considerable ring wear. may have cuts, holes, cut corners. May have taped edges. The lowest grade.

In my opinion, the grade of “Mint” and the word “Mint” does not equal Perfection. The grade of Perfection does not exist, as far as I know. Different phono cartridges and stereo setups, condition of the needle and if the record is cleaned before playing (or not cleaned) affects the way a vinyl record sounds. You can look at a record with the naked eye and not see micro imperfections which might affect the music and the sound. There are just too many variables. I listen to records after cleaning them. If I do not hear skips or pops or snaps and I do not see noticeable scratches, then as far as I am concerned, that record is Mint. Be very careful not to compare my grading standards with those of others. I do not use Goldmine and to compare my grades to Goldmine is not really fair. Remember, it's always best to ask questions BEFORE bidding!

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

I have added a third photo. In the white circle which I have ditally added to the photo(not drawn on the album!)is Ringo's black sweater that can be seen by the naked eye. I have tried to lighten the photo as much as possible so that you can copy it, save it to your Windows computer and then use your photo viewer to zoom in on the area and you should see the sweater.

It is confirmed now, this is a SECOND STATE BUTCHER BLOCK COVER! There is no doubt. Why did I not know this before? Why did I leave it out of the listing information? For the simple fact that I did not know where to look to see the sweater...I only learned it today. Silly me.

Because of this, I must insist that if YOU win this album, there will be NO RETURNS ACCEPTED! I feel that I have done a great job in describing the condition of this album. If you win, I will want you to email me that you accept my conditions and that you are buying this album "as is". No Returns. You see, I don't want a Buyer who thinks he can pull a fast one one me. This album sells for THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS all over Ebay and as of right now, it is bid up to only $41.00. If I don't feel right about the winner, I will cancel the sale and start over again, or offer it as a second chance auction to someone I do feel right about. Hey, this is me, Gitarman! Would I lie to you?

Questions are good. Please ask them before you bid. And Good Luck! SHAZAM!!!
