Description
The Beatles 1973 EMI / Odeon LP 'Sgt Pepper's Lonely Heart Club Band', stereo, with insert. Is a Horzu pressing with the original runout matrix and blue labels.
Manufactured by EMI Germany and like the original 1967 UK issues the gatefold sleeve is fully laminated with flipbacks inside on top. Striking differences include there is no stereo designation anywhere and has the Odeon etc. information bottom right at the rear but without the Horzu logo.
It's in particularly nice shape being strong, sharp and square and free of any significant blemishes. Nice spine, mouth, corners and edges yet has some ringwear on the back but overall I rate it 8.5 /10 for condition. Comes with a die-cut polythene lined sleeve.
9 /10 for the cut-out insert with just a tad of foxing (age browning) on the plain rear edges.
So, on to the vinyl itself. At 137g on my scale the shiny vinyl is of a nice medium weight and has signs of a few spins only as witnessed by the minor spindle tracks on the clean labels around the hole.
Really nice blue labels with tight holes and 'THE BEATLES' written in small letters at the bottoms plus only one 'new' HORZU logo on each side.
The matrices are stamped SHZE-401-A-1 and SHZE-401-B-2 on the dead wax runouts of Sides 1 and 2 respectively.
Angling the disc in room daylight at the window it looks clean. Under a bright light I see some scuffs and light hairlines which I figure is more down to storage over the years as in my estimate this disc has had minimal play. As such I give the vinyl 8.25 /10 for visual condition.
As I write I'm play testing the record on my Linn / Naim system. Wow...for what is a later Horsu issue I figure they must have used new stampers from the master recording because the definition and clarity is as good as I've heard from original 1967 UK pressings. The acid test of Sgt Pepper is the aural quality of Paul McCartney's superb bass playing and I'm hearing it clear and deep from the speakers.
Sure, overall there are some ticks in the quieter sections and on the dead band tracks plus a pop now and again but I reckon this is one nice vinyl album and as such I rate it 8.75 /10 for sound quality.
And should you disagree with my subjective assessments then no problem to return of course.
