BEATLES 45 PLEASE PLEASE ME Original RED label PARLOPHONE 45-R 4983

On offer is The Beatles ORIGINAL FIRST PRESS red-label 45rpm entitled Please Please  Me c/w Ask Me Why released in 1963 on the Red Parlophone label 45-R 4983. This was their second 45 in the U.K: and is not as easy to find on the original Red Parlophone label these days.   

·         The disc is housed in its original Parlophone Company Sleeve. The sleeve is in lovely condition (see scans) and is known as a Sleeve type- A: "Beach stripe" Company sleeve (coloured wavy lines with the Parlophone logo etc. in a SMALL box on the front and with the Parlophone logo etc. on the reverse.) Also these sleeves have a slight curved cut at the top.

·         The Red Labels have Silver Text - 'The Parlophone Co Ltd' round the rim and 'Recording First Published 1963' text. This particular example is without the ‘MADE IN GT. BRITAIN’ credit. 

·         The Side 1 label has hardly any evidence of spindle play on it – and the label is in very nice EX condition (see scans). Side 2 label has a handwritten ‘J’ on the centre (again see scans) and some minor marks – but this is not extensive. I would grade the labels as EX (side 1) /VG+ (side 2).  

·         The Matrix Numbers are ZXCE 17217-1N / ZXCE 17218-1N respectively.

·         In the run off grooves it has the PT Tax Codes (on each side) and The Stampers are 1-L and 2-L respectively.

·         The disc has a very nice sheen and is in very clean condition. It has some minor marks and evidence of play on both sides: and I would grade it visually as VG on both sides.

·         The disc has just been test played on both sides (for the first time in many years) and PLEASE PLEASE ME plays very nicely (EX) indeed. ASK ME WHY plays VG+ with some background pops and crackle.

I would overall grade this nice record as:

·         Sleeve: EX (both sides) 

·         Label EX (side 1) & VG (side 2)

·         Disc visual VG (both sides)

·         Disc Sound EX (side 1) & VG+ (side 2).

As you will see from this detailed analysis it is the B side that was played most often when the 45 was released. This was before I bought it in the mid 1970s - since when it has only been played a very few times.   

This 45 has been very well looked after over all these years. It will be supplied in a plain white sleeve with its original Parlophone sleeve as well.

Hi Thank you for your interest in this auction. I am pleased to attach photos I have just taken of both sides of the vinyl. As mentioned in my description the vinyl is VG  on both sides of this rare 45. VG is defined in the Record Collector Grading System as 'the record has obviously been played many times, but displays no major deterioration in sound quality, despite noticeable surface marks and the occasional light scratch'...
