PLEASE READ AUCTION GUIDELINES AND DESCRIPTION CAREFULLY BEFORE BIDDING!

Have you been searching and searching for a guaranteed authentic butcher cover that you will be proud to display that features a 1966 original Stereo Capitol 3rd state (peeled) version of the legendary Butcher Cover ? Look no further. This item has been relisted for a one time only reduction due to the fact that the reserve was missed by less than $100 on the last auction. We've included a photo of the cover you see in this auction prior to it being peeled. We urge you to look out there at other 2nd state Stereo peels out there and compare the quality. Unlike many of the disastrous 3rd states that you see out there, this one rivals the other Stereo peels that you will find out there and can be yours for under $900 ! It should be noted that these genuine Stereo jackets are becoming harder to find in displayable condition and thus more costly to obtain. You simply won't find a better value for the dollar ! Keep in mind that genuine stereo versions are reported to be at least five times more rare than the mono counterparts. Also included in this auction is a COA certifying the peeling process and packet chock full of history/ information about the Butcher Cover you will find nowhere else !

Please review all condition issues that are specifically detailed below prior to bidding. We feel that you'll agree that this is a steal for the price considering the reserve price on this item ! PLEASE READ THE DESCRIPTION CAREFULLY AND CONTACT US FOR QUESTIONS BEFORE BIDDING IF YOU ARE NOT SURE OF THE DESCRIPTION.

History and Terminology Of The Butcher Cover

For those who don't know, this is the famous album that was banned by Capitol records prior to release in 1966 and then covered over with the more familiar trunk cover. The butcher scene was deemed too gruesome for the general public. As a result, Capitol destroyed a great quantity of these but eventually found it more economical to cover the offending jacket with the more familiar trunk cover.

For terminology sake: 1st state: is a copy that was never covered over with a trunk cover. They are extremely rare and were practically never sold in stores and only used as promos for radio and sales managers. 2nd state: is a butcher cover with the trunk cover pasted over. 3rd state: Is a 2nd state butcher cover that has had its trunk cover(hopefully professionally) removed.

Our reserves are the most reasonable on Ebay ! First state butchers have sold for as much as $40,000! You can own a real 3rd state butcher for a tiny fraction of that cost. These are quickly being snatched up by collectors as fast as they appear.

As you can see from the photo , this is a truly gorgeous example of this rare treasure.

SPECIFIC CONDITION OF THIS ITEM IS AS FOLLOWS :

The front cover, as you can see from the photos, rivals what you usually see out there in Stereo peels. A nice peel that has a first state look to it. Nice deep fleshtones and the classic purplish/brown toned "new Improved Full Dimensional Stereo" banner. Usually these peeled Scranton Stereo covers exhibit pronounced horizontal glue lines or marked discoloration, but this is not the case here. Factory glue lines are very minimal Nothing too serious that even translates to the large photo. You will be proud to display this piece!

As far as the jacket goes, it is obvious that this jacket was well loved and enjoyed by its original owner. Both the top, bottom seam and spine all exhibit some cracking but all of this has been neatly secured. There are some chips of paper missing on the very top, middle and bottom of the spine with the largest chip measuring approximately 3/4 near the bottom of the spine . Even so, a majority of the spine writing is still present. Likewise, the top and bottom seams exhibit some balding and cracking which has been neatly secured. The back shows light wear/tanning with three intials in ink on the right hand side. Regardless of these issues, the Butcher cover itself is a beauty in spite of these wear issues regarding the jacket.

Given the fact that the peel is so nice and it's a stereo version, the price is very attractive. Although the overall condition of the jacket isn't 100% perfect and this piece might not be for the super picky collector, we've seriously adjusted the price accordingly on this one to make it one of the most affordable butcher covers with this grade appearance of the butcher slick. Due to the conditions of the pasteover process in the Capitol Records factory back in 1966, there is really no such thing as a "perfect peel". The reasoning is that the glue machines always created light score marks, small digs or other slight imperfections when applying the glue in preparation for the application of the trunk covers. Anyone that tells you differently is just not being honest. Even so, it is possible to have a near first state quality peel from a second state Butcher Cover, and this jacket displays very nicely with all of the previously mention issues appearing at a minimum. Please examine photographs for reference.

Removed trunk slick is included and exhibits some wrinkling, wear and tear/repair and a missing piece in the bottom right hand corner which was present on the original second state album cover as seen in the photo. Also included is the original stereo record in good condition (exhibits many light scuffs/ scratches but hasn't been play graded) and Capitol 1966 inner sleeve.

Our grading system is as follows:

Mint : Doesn't exist ! Just like baseball cards fresh from the pack, record sleeves have imperfections right off the factory line. We see this term used frequently but don't personally believe in it. In regard to butcher covers, the term "perfect peel" should only be applied (in our opinion) to a cover with absolutely no flaws whatsoever to the butcher cover from the peeling process. This term is also thrown around freely but given the complexities of 40+ year old paper and glue "perfect peels" just don't happen every day. Any professional peeler worth their salt will tell you that absolutely 100% perfect peels don't occur every time. Mint records also don't really exist in the real world, even if they are taken out of sealed jackets.

Near Mint :Jacket must be free of all major flaws such as writing, tears, stains, ringwear etc. Should appear as new. White color should be snowy and free of tanning. Near mint records should appear and play as new with no issues and full gloss.

VG+ : This cover may exhibit a few minor flaws such as slight wear, aging, beginning seam crack or spine wear but nothing too serious like writing or major tears or stains on the cover. Records can a exhibit a few minor marks and light sleeve scratches but nothing that should disturb the enjoyment of the record.

VG : Exhibits noticeably more wear than VG+. Average ring wear , etc. Records will exhibit more scratches and some noise may be evident in play although record should be free of any skips.

G : This is something that you only want as a filler copy. It will exhibit many issues at once such as seam splits, writing on the jacket, ringwear or stains. Record will have noticeable crackling and tics but should play through.

Poor, Fair : One step away from the garbage can and unless it's a really, really rare piece.... stay away. This jacket will be fairly trashed with full seam splits, major wear, stains etc. Record will have major wear, scratching and may not play through.

This package exceeds what you commonly see in this price range and is a great opportunity for someone who has been looking and looking for a keeper copy of this legendary album in mono that will only increase in value as these are snatched up. Overall this is a really nice piece and something that you will treasure for many years to come !
