Relevant details:
1966: John Lennon takes the tape with the rough mix of Rain home from EMI studios & puts it on his reel-to-reel deck. He's "stoned out of me mind" & loads the tape tails-out so when played it's backwards. He likes it that way & next day tells the others the entire song should be released in reverse. Although he was talked out of it, John's FUBAR led to the decision to mix in Rain's guitar solo backwards.
