Description
Recently a UK first release (in October 1970) of the cassette version of The Beatles "Please Please Me" was sold for £185 in a bid auction. These cassettes came in stereo.
The first release is identified by the 1& 7/8 ips notation on the inlay spine, a lime green or yellow paper label, and a picture of the album cover extending right down to the bottom of the inlay (unlike the reissues from January 1972 - when the market for cassettes really took off. The first Beatles cassette releases were tentative marketing exercises by EMI to test the popularity of the new listening format, which were likely to provide competition for EMI's established vinyl LP market. Consequently they are comparatively rare and few in number)
Above is the cassette only from that rare first release but without the inlay, and offered for sale, now that Beatles first release cassettes seem to be taking off with prices like the one noted above. I can provide an original 1970 Norelco case to match, free of charge with this item as in the last photograph. The last photograph shows the inlay that this cassette belongs with (the first Oct 1970 release) BUT note that this is NOT included. This item is cassette shell, tape and clear plastic Norelco case only.
It plays perfectly - I have used it on my car stereo cassette player.It has some value on its own - or you could look out for an inlay and case being sold on its own. They do come up for sale on E Bay now and again, just as Beatles reel to reel tape boxes and spools do separately. As also vinyl album sleeves and records separated from their other halves.
