• A highly collectible, rare transitional copy of The Beatles’ Rubber Soul LP (Catalogue Number: PMC 1267), released in December 1965.
• Rarity: When collectors mention a "Half Cut" -1/-4 (or -4/-1) matrix variation, they are talking about a unique hybrid pressing that bridges the gap between the very first, withdrawn version of the album and the standard production run.
• Labels: Yellow/Black Parlophone label, with "The Gramophone Co. Ltd." and "Sold in U.K..." text.
• Cover: Laminated flipback, often printed by Garrod and Lofthouse Ltd
• To understand why this record is so special, it helps to break down what happened at the EMI pressing plant in late 1965:
• Replacement: Side 1 (or Side 2) Matrix ending in -1 ("Loud Cut"): The very first pressing of the album featured -1 matrix numbers on both sides. This initial mix was mastered with a high level of compression and heavy bass. At the time, many listeners complained that the heavy bass caused the lightweight needles on 1960s record players to skip. EMI quickly halted production after just a couple of days to fix the problem.
• Side 2 (or Side 1) Matrix ending in -4 ("Standard Cut"): The engineers re-cut the audio masters with a more balanced, slightly reduced bass level. These corrected stampers were designated with a -4 matrix number. This version eventually became the standard 1965 mono pressing.
• The "Half Cut" Transitional Variant: Because of immense pressure to get hundreds of thousands of albums into shops for the Christmas rush, the factory workers did not want to throw away perfectly good, already-pressed vinyl discs. Instead, they paired remaining -1 stampers with the newly arrived -4 stampers. This created "half loud-cut" hybrid records that have the aggressive, bass-heavy mix on one side and the cleaner, re-balanced mix on the other

THE VINYL:   VERY GOOD++
HAS SOME HAIRLINES AND A FEW MINOR SCUFFS AND SCRATCHES, SO IT'S GREAT COPY AND IT PLAYS EXTREMELY WELL WITH NO STICKS OR JUMPS.  IT DOES HOWEVER HAVE SOME VERY OCCASSIONAL CLICKS AND CRACKLES, MAINLY PROMINENT IN QUIETER SECTIONS AND IN BETWEEN TRACKS.  HAS VERY CLEAN LABELS.  HAS A FEW SPINDLE MARKS BUT VERY MINOR SPINDLE WEAR. (IT'S BORDERING ON EXCELLENT)

THE COVER:   VERY GOOD+
HAS NO SIGNIFICANT DAMAGE BUT HAS SOME LAMINATE CREASES ON EDGES. A FEW THUMB CREASES ON THE FRONT.  FLIP-BACKS ARE EXCELLENT, SECURE, AND HAVE MINOR LAMINATE CREASES. NO LAMINATE LIFT.  NO SELLOTAPE OR WRITING BUT A FEW SMALL STAINS ON RINGO AND GEORGE'S CHEEK ON REAR. HAS A MINIMAL EDGE AND SPINE CREASES. SOME AGEING, BUT NO SIGNIFICANT BLEMISHES ON REAR OF SLEEVE WHICH IS VERY CLEAN.  MINOR CORNER WEAR, NO SPLITS OR TEARS, MINIMAL EDGE WEAR, NO REAL SPINE WEAR WHICH IS COMPLETELY READABLE.  THE OPENING EDGE IS VERY TIDY.  (I'VE TRIED TO PHOTOGRAPH ALL RELEVANT AREAS).
THE INNER SLEEVE:   VERY GOOD+
Original Emitex tracing paper lined inner sleeve has some creasing, some discolouration through ageing, no other stains /marks. No bottom splits or tears, but the sides may have split at some time and has been repaired (carefully glued), (hardly noticeable).  No writing or sellotape.

Strictly Graded Using RECORD COLLECTOR Grading System

Grading System:  I have used Record Collector magazine set of standards for the condition of second-hand records. I have added a (+) or (-) to my gradings where applicable.

MINT:   The record itself is in brand new condition with no surface marks or deterioration in sound quality. The cover and any extra items such as the lyric sheet, booklet or poster are in perfect condition. Records advertised as sealed or unplayed should be Mint.  (NOTE: As far as I am concerned MINT will never apply to second hand vinyl records).

EXCELLENT:   The record shows some signs of having been played, but there is very little lessening in sound quality. The cover and packaging might have slight wear and/or creasing.

VERY GOOD:   The record has obviously been played many times, but displays no major deterioration in sound quality, despite noticeable surface marks and the occasional light scratch. Normal wear and tear on the cover or extra items, without any major defects, is acceptable.

GOOD:   The record has been played so much that the sound quality has noticeably deteriorated, perhaps with some distortion and mild scratches. The cover and contents suffer from folding, scuffing of edges, spine splits, discoloration, etc.

FAIR:   The record is still just playable but has not been cared for properly and displays considerable surface noise; it may even jump. The cover and contents will be torn, stained and/or defaced.

POOR:   The record will not play properly due to scratches, bad surface noise, etc. The cover and contents will be badly damaged or partly missing.

BAD:   The record is unplayable or might even be broken, and is only of use as a collection-filler.

I grade all records in accordance with the Rare Record Price Guide (see above). However, if you feel I have graded your record incorrectly please email me ASAP so we can resolve the problem amicably.

Post & Packaging - I recycle all packaging so you will get your goods in recycled packaging. All items over £20 are sent ‘Tracked' and I always obtain 'Proof of Posting' for cheaper items. All items are securely and properly packaged and vinyl is sent using double corrugated cardboard stiffeners or similar.
