Description
Here's a rare one!
A red plastic record rack made in the U.K. by Selcol (they also made them in orange plastic), the company that made some of the Beatle toy guitars. And I realise that in the pictures it looks Orange, but it’s NOT ORANGE, IT IS RED! There is a (facsimile) decal with facsimile signatures attached to the rack on one side. Originally, a round Beatles sticker was adhered directly to the "spokes" of the side of the rack too (there is a facsimile of this one as well). The only way to place the records in the rack was to rip right through the original Beatles logo sticker. Needless to say this Selcol Beatles 45 Record rack is difficult to find in any condition. The rack which can hold up to forty 45's is in VG+ condition. This example also has a perfect set of Gold stickers indicating the record numbers and that it is a ‘Mini Disk Rack’. It is of course stamped Selcol etc.
In all my years of collecting Beatles stuff, and that's 53 years now(!), I have only ever come across 5 of these Selcol Record racks; that's one every 10 1/2 years or so......I'm now downsizing....I CAN'T take it with me....I'm just the present custodian......you could be the next one.
Just so that no-one misunderstands; the Beatles stickers shown in the photographs are NOT THE ORIGINAL ONES, they are facsimiles. The original stickers were torn off, over usage and years of wear etc. If anyone has any material, advertising or otherwise about this item I would love to see a copy (for my personal archives). There was an LP Record Rack too, but I've only ever seen photos of that item, and I believe that the last one of those that went at auction, some time ago, in the States, sold for around $18,000.
If anyone has any problem with this particular item that I am selling, then please do me the courtesy of contacting me direct.
The photo of two of these Selcol Record Racks shows; one is RED, like mine, and the other is ORANGE. You can see the original stickers on both of the racks.
"Selcol had been making musical toys since the late 1940's......in January 1964 Selcol announced it had been given worldwide exclusive rights to use The Beatles name on 'acoustic & electric guitars, tom-toms and record racks'.......Beatles New Beat, Beatles New Sound, Mersey Sound, New Beatles Jnr, Beatles Big 6 in red and silver and the Beatles Red Jet Electric.........Ringo Starr Snare Drum.....two types of Beatles Record Racks and a money box. 120-150,000 Beatles guitars were being made every month. By March 1965 over one million had been sold."
Just as a matter of interest folks....happy bidding,
Yours,
Garry Marsh.
