Description
The original UK cassette release of The Beatles "Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" on lime green paper label with the old style Parlophone logo. In very good condition, inlay crisp and clean, and plays perfectly. Dates to 1968/69.
The artwork dates to 1968, when EMI were testing the new cassette format market, with experimental designs, and the natural choice for this were their most popular and biggest selling artists. In 1968, a small number of "Pepper" cassettes were issued on green paper label with the Parlophone logo. The original inlay artwork was kept for the successive lime green paper labels These paper label designs were subsequently sold, with the original 1968 artwork inlay design and a newer updated black box "EMI/ Parlophone" logo up until the end of 1971 ( this item has the earlier logo), when the "all gold inlay" design were introduced to time with the production of cassettes in large quantities to meet the explosion in popularity of the new format vis a vis vinyl. Now The Beatles could be listened to whilst in a car "on the move". Quite a novelty as I remember....
Note the absence of any IE international catalogue number on this original inlay - the only Beatles cassette album to omit this, as the sytem was not yet devised when the inlay design was conceived in 1968. "Sgt Pepper has the distinction of being the first Beatles album to be released on musicassette (as the cassette was then known) and the running order of the songs remained the same as on the vinyl album. EMI's vinyl catalogue no is on the spine - TC-PCS-7027 - as is the tape speed 1 &7/8ths ips (inches per second).
The item is in very good condition, case, inlay, paper label, and looks to have been stored indefinitely rather than being played. Very nice indeed!
The inlay reverse shows the "Sold In The UK etc...." text which was prominent on the labels of the vinyl releases of "Sgt Pepper" and which was discontinued by EMI on all its products in March 1969. The singular "four Beatles heads" are also unique to this early issue cassette and are not found on the mass production "all gold inlay" issues from January 1972 on.
The features on this item enable it to be dated accurately as one of the earliest Beatles cassettes issued when the cassette market was being explored by EMI. Successors to this item were "Abbey Road" in late 1969, and "Let It Be" in June 1970.
Posting both within the UK and internationally.
