THE BEATLES - SGT PEPPERS LONELY HEARTS CLUB BAND

This is the incredibly Rare 'HYBRID' Pressing of Sgt Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band,  with the fabled MONO / STEREO HYBRID cover in great condition.

The original one box pressings are now famous for their audio clarity, and highly sought-after amongst audiophiles. This original ONE BOX UK PRESSING has the PARLOPHONE Labels and TOP audio throughout! It's a Great Playing Record and an Ultra Rare Complete edition with the rare 'HYBRID' cover.

The Hybrid Sgt. Peppers is an extreme rarity in the Sgt Peppers catalogue. So rare that serious collectors only became aware in recent years that this rarity existed, these covers were made in an extremely small run.

Come to be known as the ‘Hybrid’ cover, this pressing of Sgt. Peppers has the all important Mono and Stereo assignation on the rear panel, an adaptation only found on a tiny amount of prints. These rare covers also have the text on the rear lower panel, ‘This is a Mono recording,’ and 'Printed and Made by Garrod & Lofthouse Ltd.'

This genuine 'Hybrid' cover is in great condition. Finding these rare pressings at all is a needle in a hay stack problem, but getting one in decent condition is virtually unheard of.

Released in June 1967. Spending a total of 27 weeks at the top of the UK Album Chart and 15 weeks at number one on the American Billboard 200. Prominent critic Kenneth Tynan described Sgt. Pepper In The Times as; "a decisive moment in the history of Western civilisation."

The mothers and stampers read: 'A L H' & 'M G M' making this a very early MONO copy. This LP comes complete with the original Peter Blake / Jann Haworth cut out insert in superb condition and comes with the original Red / White inner sleeve which is also in superb condition with no seam splits at all!!! This is an ARCHIVE quality MONO FIRST PRESS of this rare LP.

ALBUM PLAYED FOR GRADING:

Yes – brilliant sound quality throughout! This great record plays up to the visual grading and beyond. It's a virtually flawless unmarked vinyl that plays with crystal clear loud audio.

Sgt Peppers is a complex and varied collection of music, and is usually a relatively sensitive piece of vinyl, hard to find in clear audio condition. Worn copies can have a lot of surface sound even on musically complex and busy tracks like 'Within You Without You.' This rare pressing sounds great, with crystal clear sound throughout. There is certainly no dominant or even noticeable interference, and NO hissing, crackle, NO loud pops or clicks. It really sounds great and plays with TOP sound separation and clarity! The channels are clean and unstressed. The record plays with staggering power, with near silence between the tracks. Rich and detailed sound with massive dynamics, unique mix and production.

SGT PEPPER'S LONELY HEARTS CLUB BAND bursts in with great clear sound, with no pops or clicks and virtually no static - incredible crystal clear audio. Then the music bursts in followed by incredibly clear audio.

Leading into A LITTLE HELP FROM MY FRIENDS, both tracks playing with super clear audio, with no pops or clicks at all.

LUCY IN THE SKY WITH DIAMONDS, a track that so often has lots of interference and surface sound, plays great. Really nice clear audio, a superb example, virtually no detectable background static at all, and that’s incredible rare. This really is a near faultless performance.

GETTING BETTER also plays with great clear sound, again with no detectable static, you can hear sounds on this pressing that are virtually always lost.

It leads into FIXING A HOLE, again an amazing performance.  No pops or clicks at all, not even a single tick. The ultra delicate SHE'S LEAVING HOME plays beautifully, with no pops or clicks, there is barely any light static - a great example of this poignant song.

BEING FOR THE BENEFIT OF MR KITE plays through with great clear sound. This is a truly great audio performance.

Side 2. begins with the eastern influence of WITHIN YOU WITHOUT YOU, and all the complex layering is clearly defined.  There is virtually no light static at the very start of the intro, then after the vocals come in the sound is crystal clear. No pops clicks or static during the track, the audio is just superb.

WHEN I'M SIXTY-FOUR, another relatively quiet track plays superbly. I noticed some very light static and a single light pop in the middle of the track, but it was very light.

LOVELY RITA, plays with no pops or clicks, and barely any detectable static. The sound is just perfect.

GOOD MORNING GOOD MORNING bursts in, and although it's a slightly raucous track, it is still heavily layered, and all the layering is crystal clear.

SGT PEPPER'S LONELY HEARTS CLUB BAND (REPRISE) sounds perfect and leads into the album finale and masterpiece, A DAY IN THE LIFE.

This is such  varied and delicate track, with such a range of sound effects and quiet areas, it's usually heavily overshadowed with static and even distortion. Not here, it plays absolutely beautifully, with super clear sound, and no loud pops or clicks, barely any detectable surface sound, just great, crystal clear audio.

Amazing clear sound! Even in the long outro there is minimal surface sound, with a few barely detectable ticks towards the end of the long piano chord, and it leads to the near fabled rare ending loop; a recording of the Beatles talking, which was then cut up, spliced back together at random and played back repeatedly. Known as 'the Sgt. Pepper Inner Groove'.

Superb sound, every track has been tested and I could find no obvious sound blemishes. Wonderful TOP audio, there is NO distortion, NO sticks or jumps what so ever, and virtual silence between the tracks. This vinyl is an absolute gem! ' A Day in the Life ' sings out with silence in the run ins and quiet areas. Great music with great clarity, and so hard to find with this type of sound. It would be hard to better this audio performance.
The music jumps out, with definition and clarity, the vocals which come through with tremendous power. It's the same with the bass guitar and drums, whilst the guitars come through crisp and clear. The tonal quality makes this a sensational pressing. With the clear and extra clear cut engineering giving the audio a vibrant sound which cannot be beaten.

In my experience these 1st press One Box editions play with astonishing audio. The mastering is fantastic and if you can find a great, un worn and unblemished example, they play with unbelievable separation and clarity. This one has to be the best I've ever heard.

A great all round example of this classic vinyl. Staggering stereo mix, unlike the re-issues which lack the impact. A TOP all round example of this great vinyl. This is a great Audio pleasure and I would have to give the Audio at least an NEAR MINT to MINT grading.

THE RECORD – VISUAL GRADING

STUNNING, this is a superb piece of glossy vinyl, and a really thick pressing. Deep clear grooves that can only be found on the original pressings, this vinyl looks unplayed. The record has great shine, with NO scratches and NO hairlines. Even when inspected under a spot light, there are hardly any obvious paper removal marks, or light whispy lines, un believable!

This is a stunning example and easily grades NEAR MINT to MINT.

Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band is the eighth studio album by The Beatles, released in June 1967. Recorded over a 129-day period beginning in December 1966, Sgt. Pepper sees the band exploring further the experimentation of their previous album, Revolver (1966). Making use of orchestras, hired musicians and innovative production techniques, the album incorporates elements of genres such as music hall, jazz, rock and roll, western classical and traditional Indian music; its lyrics deal particularly with themes of childhood and everyday life.

Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band was a commercial success, spending a total of 27 weeks at the top of the UK Album Chart and 15 weeks at number one on the American Billboard 200. A defining album in the emerging psychedelic rock style, Sgt. Pepper was critically acclaimed upon release and won four Grammy awards in 1968. Often recognised by prominent critics and publications as one of the most influential albums in the history of popular music.

The cohesive structure and careful sequencing and transitioning of songs on the album, as well as the use of the Sgt. Pepper framing motif, have led the album to be widely acknowledged as an early and ground-breaking example of the concept album.

The Beatles were present during the mixing of the album in mono and the LP was originally released in mono, alongside a stereo mix prepared by Abbey Road engineers led by Geoff Emerick.

The two mixes have many differences. For example, the stereo mix of "She's Leaving Home," was mixed at a slower speed than the original recording and therefore plays at a slower tempo and lower pitch than the original recording. Conversely, the mono version of "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds," is slightly slower than the stereo version and features much heavier flanging and reverb effects. McCartney's yelling voice in the coda section of "Sgt. Pepper (Reprise)" before the segue into "A Day in the Life," can plainly be heard in the mono version, but is nearly inaudible in the stereo version. The mono version of the song also features drums that open with much more presence and force, turned up in the mix. Also in the stereo mix, the famous segue at the end of "Good Morning Good Morning," (the chicken-clucking sound which becomes a guitar noise) is timed differently and a crowd noise tape comes in later during the intro to "Sgt. Pepper (Reprise)".

Other variations between the two mixes include louder laughter at the end of the mono mix of "Within You Without You," a gush of laughter during the intro of the reprise version of the title track and a colder, echo-less ending on the mono version of "Being for the Benefit of Mr. Kite!"

This Ultra Rare FIRST EVER ONE BOX press gives a great archival listening experience.

VINYL TESTED FOR ANY SIGNS OF WARPING:

Yes, NONE visible what so ever when tested be sight and on a moving turntable.

THE LABELS

These 1st Press ONE BOX labels are in stunning condition, with no sticker marks or writing and virtually no spindle traces. Perhaps one on each side of the tiniest and lightest traces you can get. All in all these are great examples.

Graded at NEAR MINT.

THE COVER

The Grammy Award-winning album packaging was art-directed by Robert Fraser, designed by Peter Blake and his wife Jann Haworth, and photographed by Michael Cooper. It featured a colourful collage of life-sized cardboard models of famous people on the front of the album cover and lyrics printed on the back cover, the first time this had been done on an English pop LP. The Beatles themselves, in the guise of the Sgt. Pepper band, were dressed in custom-made military-style outfits made of satin dyed in day-glo colours. The suits were designed by Manuel Cuevas.

Art director Robert Fraser was a prominent London art dealer who ran his own gallery and sponsored exhibitions at the Indica Gallery, through which he had become a close friend of McCartney. it was at his influence that the group abandoned their original cover design, a psychedelic painting by The Fool, a Dutch design collective and band who were influential in the psychedelic style of art in British popular music in the late 1960s.

This is a STUNNING example of this Ultimate Rarity. Bright a clean with laminate that is virtually unmarked, and it still creaks when opened. There is minimal scuffing to the corners, and a little creasing. The opening edges are very square and totally un frayed. The back cover is nice and clean, with NO ring wear, which is very unusual for these covers. There are a coupe of light creases on the spine, the spine text is fully intact.

The inside Gatefold is clean and virtually unmarked. The Spine shows minimal wear only, the spine text is totally intact. A great example. All round, this is a really stunning cover!

Graded at VERY GOOD PLUS to EXCELLENT.

THE INNER

These sepia inners are rare, and often replaced with later editions by unscrupulous traders. Made of thin paper they were nearly always torn at the seems, and were usually discarded. This one has NO splits on any of the sides, NO splits or frays at the top, and no staining or discolouration.  There is just marking from the impression of the record as seen in the images, and a couple of tiny creases. A stunning example.

Graded at EXCELLENT.

THE INSERT

Originally the group had wanted the album to include a package with badges, pencils and other small Sgt. Pepper goodies but this proved far too costly to realise. Instead, the album came with a page of cardboard cut-outs carrying the description: SGT. PEPPER CUT-OUTS . Moustache . Picture Card . Stripes . Badges . Stand Up . The special inner sleeve, included in the early pressings of the LP, featured a psychedelic pattern designed by The Fool. The final bill for the cover was £2,868 5s 3d (equivalent to £37,531 today), a staggering sum for the time. It has been estimated that this was 100 times the average cost for an album cover in those days.

A great example in stunning condition. No writing, creasing or stains. As new, and Virtually perfect! And the correct insert for this one box 'Hybrid' pressing, with a different colouration to the other sleeves.

Graded at NEAR MINT.

RARITY

A complete 'HYBRID' MONO STEREO pressing of Sgt Peppers in any condition is scarce. The vinyl is so often played so much, heavily marked, scratched, with noisy, poor and distorted sound.

The cover, which makes this such an extreme rarity is hard to find in any condition, even modestly worn examples are impossible to find, and this one is a stunning example. A great press like this, with a  heavy pressed piece of vinyl, the original sepia inner and cut out insert, fantastic!. A record that looks and sounds like new, with a  cover to match, makes this a un believable rarity and a TOP investment piece. SUPERB!

We aim to describe all records as accurately as possible, and offer a full refund on return if for any reason you are not completely happy with the item description.

-

VINYL SOUND - PLEASE NOTE:

Highest quality vinyl with clear sound is rare, and what we always aim for. We only sell records that play with TOP AUDIO performance; super clear sound uninterrupted by hiss or other interference. Even with the cleanest pressing you will find occasional static or occasional light tics during playback, caused by a build of dust in the grooves. This is clearly different from the distortion, loud pops, repeating tics or clicks that are found on heavily played and worn pieces of vinyl. Any static build up will reduce when played, and we advise a light clean between plays for optimal performance.

.

We only use photographs of the item for sale taken with professional digital cameras. The images are designed to be as clear as possible, giving an exact representation of the item.
