For those who don't know, this is the famous album that was banned by Capitol records prior to release in 1966 and then covered over with the more familiar trunk cover.The butcher scene was deemed too gruesome for the general public. As a result, Capitol destroyed a great quantity of these but eventually found it more economical to cover the offending jacket with the more familiar trunk cover.

For terminology sake: 1st state: is a copy that was never covered over with a trunk cover. They are extremely rare and were practically never sold in stores and only used as promos for radio and sales managers. 2nd state: is a butcher cover with the trunk cover pasted over. 3rd state: Is a 2nd state butcher cover that has had its trunk cover(hopefully professionally) removed.

Our reserves are the most reasonable on Ebay ! First state butchers have sold for as much as $40,000! You can own a real 3rd state butcher for a tiny fraction of that cost.These are quickly being snatched up by collectors as fast as they appear.

SPECIFIC CONDITION OF THIS ITEM IS AS FOLLOWS:

The front cover, as you can see from the photos, is beautiful. Gorgeous natural, rich colors and fleshtones and simply another superior peel. Although this is a 3rd state, this piece has A FIRST STATE LOOK ! Factory glue lines, residue, etc is practically non existent. This is the difference ! You will often see streaky peels out there with pronouced brown lines or blotches and discoloration caused by bleeding from glue thinners. We have pioneeered a series of techniques over a period of years that provide the most stunning results you will ever see on a professionally peeled Butcher Cover.  We would put this butcher slick up against anything out there.You will be proud to display this piece. The removed trunk slick is included and in framable condition with some wear and tear.This is a keeper that you won't have to upgrade. 

This is a very strong jacket with NO SEAM SPLITS ! The spine writing is completely ledgible. Although the record and inner sleeve will fit comfortably inside the jacket, we strictly advise against attempting to place a record and inner sleeve inside the jacket as doing this would cause possible future pressure and damage to seams and 40 year old paper. Overall jacket exhibits some tanning to the back and borders. The back of the jacket is clean with just a few light wear spots and nearly no ringwear. All photos are taken with flash which may slightly wash out colors. NO SIGHTLY TEARS, STICKERS, NAMES WRITTEN OR OTHER MAJOR ISSUES. THIS ONE IS A KEEPER !

This auction includes an original Capitol 1966 orange inner sleeve and mono record in  VG (a few non deep scuffs which were play graded and didn't sound bad) condition PLEASE KEEP IN MIND THAT WE TRY TO BE AS HONEST AS WE CAN IN GRADING AND TRY TO PROVIDE THE REAL PERSPECTIVE OF THIS PIECE IS HOW IT APPEARS IN THE PHOTOS.

Please Note:

 ANY genuine 1966 Butcher Cover should exhibit a high dot matrix image, no matter who peeled it. Anything that you may read to the contrary is patently false. Even the crummiest of amateur peel jobs should exhibit a high dot matrix printing as this is not something that diminishes as a result of the peeling process. While on baseball cards, a high dot matrix printing is usually the sign of a counterfeit card, in regard to a Butcher Cover, to the contrary, is the “lay of the land”. No one seller or peeler on the planet has a market on revealing the high dot matrix on a Butcher Cover. This is a ridiculous notion.

Check out the significantly magnified photo (above) of the baby doll body from our Butcher Cover currently being auctioned. You can clearly see the significant high dot matrix printing revealed. To be quite honest, the printing technique utilized by Capitol for this cover art was not the best technique available for printing even back in 1966 and genuine Butcher Cover slicks are actually inferior quality prints compared to what a fine, high quality print would look like from the original negative. Just look at the inside gatefold of the Beatles “Rarities” album if you don’t believe us. The high dot matrix is only an asset in regard to giving the jacket the unusual appearance that Capitol staff member George Osaki intended for the printing of the jackets.

If you’re looking for high quality outrageously luscious lifelike colors on the dolls, meat, etc , you won’t get it, even on a 1st state (never covered) Butcher Cover, because that wasn’t the intention in the first place.

Capitol Records artist George Osaki specifically requested, at the time of the printing of these jackets in 1966, that the jacket be printing utilizing a high dot matrix on a specific type of paper to give the illusion of a painting on canvas. The actual paper the Butcher Cover was printed on was never used before or after on any other Beatles album jacket. You can read more specifics about the high dot matrix printing in the fantastic hardcover book “The Beatles On Capitol Records Part Two”.

We have been selling on Ebay since 1998 and have been peeling and selling genuine Butcher Covers for decades. We have been including Certificates Of Authenticity specifying the chain of custody and peeling process since we began. Only recently, have others been furnishing COA’s from their peelers. You may ask, what is the difference ? Well, for one thing, the seller who sends a 2nd state Butcher to another party for peeling cannot state 100% for sure what has been performed on that cover because they didn’t peel it and didn’t witness the peeling process. All of the copycat free giveaways, buzzwords, huge fonts and high impact ads don’t change that. Our 2nd State Butcher Covers never leave our custody and so we CAN talk with 100% certainty about what work has been performed.

Bottom line:

No matter what, we want you to be happy even if that means buying from somebody else. For years, we have referred potential buyers to other sellers or other Butcher peelers when, due to volume constraints or for whatever reason, we could not be of assistance. What we don’t want, is for you to be misled by false information. There are a handful of great Butcher Cover artists and none of these artists ONLY peel Butcher Covers for any particular seller(s).

Whomever came up with the phrase “imitation is the most sincerest form of flattery” probably didn’t think about the application to the business world. The mimicking of our ads, titles, free giveaways etc may continue on but don‘t be fooled. We professionally peel every single Butcher Cover that we sell with the highest possible results and those covers never leave our hands until they are sold. Copycat ads, free giveaways, titles, font size/colors etc, are usually cause for serious question at the extreme and generally reflects desperation and a serious lack of originality on behalf of those that create them.
