On offer is a superb MONO original UK pressing of The Beatles Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club, with an extremely rare “transitional” cover combined with the also rare “One box EMI” label.
Most people do not even know this pressing exists, but Beatles collectors will know this is the rarest of all UK pressed Sgt. Peppers LPs. The labels are Parlophone Black & Silver “One box EMI”, with “the “Gramophone Company” edge text. The “Transitional” cover was produced for a very short time in late 1969 so they could use one cover for both Mono and Stereo pressings. On the back cover both PMC 7027 Mono and PCS 7027 Stereo are printed in the upper right corner. Beatles collectors and experts estimate only about 300 of these covers were printed, it is thought as a trial, and that they were never put into regular production due to EMI deleting Mono pressings from their catalogue in late 1969. This coincided with the short-lived “One box EMI” label. You will likely never have an opportunity again to own this exceptionally rare Sgt. Peppers pressing.
This is the Cat. No. PMC 7027 Mono pressing. Matrix numbers: XEX 637-1 & XEX 638-1. Stamper codes: 6/MPR & 8/MOA.
This copy comes complete with the original “cut out” insert, in near perfect condition, with only a very faint and slight grubbiness on one edge of both sides, and the original and correct “Patents” inner sleeve, in very good (+) condition with no splits or tears.
The labels are in excellent condition, perfectly flawless except for a few small faint spindle marks. The center holes are in near perfect condition.
The vinyl is superb, easily excellent (+) condition. There are no marks or scratches and only 1 small extremely faint hairline visible under very bright light on “Within You Without You”.
This copy plays superbly. It is easily excellent. The only flaws are minor; there is mild crackle on side one run-in to Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club” and on side two leading into Within You Without You”, and two mild and faint clicks on “She’s leaving home”. Other than the initial run ins, there is very little crackle, and when present, it is faint. This is a terrific sounding Sgt. Peppers; very clean, strong UK audio.
The gatefold “Transitional” cover is in a very strong excellent (+) condition. There is no edge wear, a small amount of minor lamination peeling on the otherwise perfect spine, perfect corners with no wear, a beautiful shiny lamination both front and back, with no glazing, has only 3 very small minor creases on the front, and only one small and minor crease on the back. There is a very small amount of EXTREMELY faint ring rubbing on the front-top. The rear lamination is as close to perfect and mint as you will ever see. The inside covers and spine are perfect; in fact, it has its new album crackle when opening the gatefold, and for that reason and to retain this astonishingly as-new gatefold opening, I have never fully opened the gatefold. This is one beautiful Sgt. Peppers cover.
This LP was sourced in the UK by a reputable and well-established UK dealer about 5 years ago when I acquired my UK Beatles collection. It has not been played even once since I purchased it, other than my initial play to verify condition upon purchase, and just recently once again to have one more listen to this incredible sounding UK music. There is nothing that sounds like an excellent condition UK 1st press Beatles album… certainly no CD sounds like this. I am now selling off my prized collection of UK Beatles albums.
