BEATLES UK, Sgt Pepper Fourth Proof sleeve, original UK 1967 mono LP.

PMC 7027, original UK 1967 mono black and yellow Parlophone labels.

A UK issue in original condition, featuring:

1. this unique variant of this album features what was a pre production sleeve. The first three ‘Proof’ sleeves never saw the light of day, these ‘Fourth Proof’ sleeves were passed around at EMI for final agreement. Never meant to be released, but a small number of these sleeves did find their way into the shops. As these were ‘Proof’ sleeves they should NEVER have left the printers.

There are a number of unique features to these ‘Proof’ sleeves when compared to the final sleeves that went onto official production:

a. the printed text of, ‘Fourth Proof’, ‘AR’ and ‘D 13217’ printed upside down, found on the top right ‘flip back’ on the inner ‘gate fold’ of the sleeve. The story of this is that the old style of ‘visual flip backs’ were on the way out and the sleeve for the latest Beatles LP, Sgt Pepper was to feature the new ‘hidden inner flip back’ design, (but this never happened) it was therefore thought that the above text would NOT be seen !. Apparently the ‘A R’ stands for the designers initials and the ‘D 13217’ is the internal catalogue number for the printers of the sleeve, ‘Garrod and Lofthouse’,

b. the rear of the sleeve features the text ‘Printed and made by Garrod & Lofthouse Ltd Patents Pending’, it is only the ‘Fourth Proof’ sleeves and a very small number of very early UK ‘flip back’ Pepper mono sleeves that have the text, ‘Patents Pending’. The sleeve normally just states ‘Printed and made by Garrod & Lofthouse Ltd’ (G&L). By the time of the official UK launch of Sgt Pepper in June 1967, G&L had got their ‘Patents’ confirmed and the text, ‘Patents Pending’ was removed from the rear of the sleeve,

c. the colour of Georges jacket appears more of a pink colour instead of red, as on the standard sleeves,

d. the colour of Johns jacket appears more of a yellow colour instead of green, as on the standard sleeves,

2. the record label on side one has an additional ‘dot’, ie as it reads, ‘Sold in .U.K.’, etc.

CONDITION:

THE MAIN SLEEVE: is in overall near excellent condition, the sleeve is fully laminated. The laminate has retained its excellent clean, glossy finish. The spine is in near very good condition as it has some ‘rubbing’ to the centre and some lifting / flaking to the laminate, so only about half of the text on the spine is readable. The four opening edges are in excellent++ condition and have remained clean and sharp. When the ‘gate fold’ sleeve is opened the original two top, ‘flip backs’, ie fold over edges can be seen. Inside of the ‘gate fold’ sleeve it has remained super clean and glossy. There are NO tears, splits, stains, stickers or sticker residue on the sleeve. When the ‘gate fold’ sleeve is opened, at the top of the spine there is a small name written in black pen. And on the rear, top right of the sleeve the original price ? has been written, long ago in black pen of, 32/6.

THE CARD INSERT: is not present.

THE INNER SLEEVE: is in excellent condition, the period plain white EMI ‘Patents applied for’ inner sleeve has remained crease free. The two opening edges have remained very clean for their age. Theres NO pen writing, tears, splits, stains, stickers or sticker residue to the inner sleeve.

THE RECORD: each side is in near very good condition. The record is made from the period 1960s, quality ‘thick, heavy’ vinyl. The record has remained dark and glossy. The record lays flat on the turntable.

The matrix are: XEX 637 - 1 and XEX 638 – 1.

The mother / stampers are: ‘ 2 GLM ’ and ‘4 GGM’.

THE AUDIO: each side plays very good++. Each side plays with some ‘ticks’ and ‘crackle’ heard here and there. The record plays with a full, loud period mono sound.

THE LABELS: each side is in very good++ condition. The letters ‘KT’ are embossed around the spindle hole on side two. The labels are free from any pen writing, stickers or sticker residue.

THE RECORD / SLEEVES ARE THEN PUT INTO A NEW PLASTIC SLEEVE FOR FURTHER PROTECTION.
