Becks Sea Change remains the best record of the indie icons career. And how. The sonic chameleon shocked the world in 2002 with this warm-sounding folk-pop albuma sincere, honest, and mature meditation on the end of a nine-year relationship with his girlfriend. As for the vocalists trademark irony, sarcasm, and humor? Not here. In their place is an affecting emotionalism to which anyone whos ever been in (or out) of love will relate. The music is equally personal and meditative. Gorgeous string arrangements come courtesy of his father, David Campbell, and illustrate the heartbreak that informs the beautiful melodies and tranquil moods.

Best of all, this album is anything but a bummer. Intending to be heard to from start to finish, Beck begins the record with songs conveying emptiness and loss, and gradually moves on to narratives that detail what changes are necessary to regain a sense of identity, purpose, and feeling. By the time he reaches the concluding Little One, the healing has begun. Consider this Becks mellowest golda feat confirmed by its selection as the #2 record of 2002 on Village Voices all-encompassing Pazz & Jop poll.

And now, thanks to truly painstaking remastering efforts, this embraceable and intimate gem sounds better than ever. No lie. Master tapes of every cut were delivered to Mobile Fidelity engineers on a separate reel, with the finished product taking months to perfect. Unlike previous digital versions, no compression or dynamic processing was used, making this half-speed mastered 180-gram 2-LP set not just the definitive version its the only analog version worth owning!

The Best Beck?    May 31, 2011    audiofan    Bethany OK US
This LP is simply a masterpiece, both because it is perhaps the finest collection of tunes yet offered by Mr. Hanson, and because the sonics are so pristine, so free of grain, noise, and artifact as to be the very definition of a reference recording. It will take a few spins, but once you pick your jaw up off the floor and focus your attention from the stunning sonics MoFi's engineer's have given to Sea Change, you'll then be equally floored by the incredible songwriting. Those fans who are familiar only with the quirkier side of Beck's talents may be unprepared for the maturity, sophistication, and emotional depth so plainly worn here on the artist's sleeve. Truly, from pain comes the greatest growth, and Beck's well-documented personal trials during the making of Sea Change possibly contributed to this career-defining effort. The fact that this album is SO different from what fans have come to expect may be the only reason this limited-edition gem is still available. But kids, don't wait too much longer - this is simply a MUST own recording - on SO many levels. This is, and should be, all about a flawless pressing, MoFi's world-class remastering, pristine sonics, deep-black backgrounds, and enormous soundstage. Bravo!
