Description
I am not an expert in classical music or classical records. However, I have a large collection which I enjoy listening to and which I am now intending to replace with CD recordings. This is the first of the classical records which I intend to auction. It is 'Piano Concerto No. 5 in E flat major, op. 73 ('Emperor') by Beethoven, performed by the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Hans Schmidt-Isserstedt with Wilhelm Backhaus. The record is pressed on the stereo UK Decca label and is dated 1959 (please see description of the record below). The catalogue number is SXL 2179.
OUTER SLEEVE - This is laminated on the front and is in fine condition considering its age. On the front top right hand corner it states - DECCA STEREOPHONIC FFSS - SXL 2179'. The edges of the sleeve are in fine condition with minimal wear. The spine of the sleeve is also in superb condition with minimal wear. The rear of the sleeve shows some minor discolouration and slight ring wear. Along the right hand side of the rear of the sleeve it states - 'Beethoven : PIANO CONCERTO No. 5 (emperor) - backhaus/vpo/schmidt-isserstedt - decca mono lxt 5553 stereo 2179'. Along the bottom of the rear of the sleeve it states - 'Laminated with Clarifoil made by British Celanese Limited - Cover shows the portrait of Beethoven painted in 1806 by Neugass for Prince Carl Lichnowsky - Printed in Rngland by Robert Syace'. There is also a detailed analysis of the concerto on therear of the sleeve which confirms that Beethoven wrote it in 1809. All the wording on the rear of the sleeve is 100% readable. I have graded the sleeve Ex.
INNER PRINTED SLEEVE - This is an original white Decca company diecut sleeve with a clear polythene inner. The term FFSS (Full Stereo Freqquency Sound) is explained on both sides of the sleeve. The sleeve is in superb condition and I have graded it Ex+.
RECORD - With the catalogue number SXL 2179 I understand that this record is one of the SXL 2000 stereo series. I also understand that this series was first launched in 1958 and that the earliest labels used throughout the entire SXL 2000 series are black with silver lettering. There is a deep circular groove which runs around the label and is about 15mm from the edge of the label. The label whaich is black with silver lettering features the words 'ORIGINAL RECORDING BY THE DECCA RECORD CO. LTD. LONDON' which are printed along the top portion of the label circumference. The unboxed DECCA logo is printed in sliver at the top of the label with the FFSS circular logo printed above this. Below the DECCA logo the words 'FULL FREQUENCY STEREOPHONIC SOUND' are printed in black inside a 11mm silver band across the width of the label. The ctalogue number (SXL 2179) is printed on the right side of both labels. Above these are the inverted matrix numbers (ZAL 4597 on side one and ZAL 4598 on side two). On the left hand side of each label it states - 'SPEED 33 1/2 - RECORDING FIRST PUBLISHED 1959 - DECCA REGD. TRADE MARK'. At the bottom of the labels it states - 'Made in England - ALL RIGHTS OF THE MANUFACTURER AND OF THE OWNER OF THE RECORDED WORK RESERVED - UNAUTHORISED PUBLIC PERFORMANCE BROADCASTING AND COPYING OF THIS RECORD PROHIBITED'. The matrix numbers on the run-off grooves are as follows - side one - ZAL-4597-2E (stampers - 321 CA SM) - side two - ZAL-4598-2E (stampers - 21 SM). I understand that this example is referred to by classical experts as an 'ED1' or English Decca 1st Label), manufactured before 1963.
The record plays beautifully on both sides with some very minor surface noise and the occasional pop and click. I doubt if you will find a better example of this wonderful record. I have graded it Ex.
