Description
Extremely rare item up for offer here. I've asked numerous people about it and have found no record of another copy existing...I turned it up in Humboldt County a while back.
The cover reads: 'A response to Vincent Van Gogh's 'The Starry Night' by Aolani Beere and Ben Chasney, April 28 1995,' placing this recording before any Six Organs releases and even before the Plague Lounge LP, making it the first Ben Chasny release of any kind. This was back when he still lived in Eureka; Aolani was another Eureka resident and she also played violin and sang in the hardcore band Sake with her brother Roshawn at the time (they did a great 10' the next year on Zafio records). The cover/insert is handmade out of a generic tape insert and the liner notes are hand written in ballpoint pen (written by Aolani I'm assuming, because she spelled Ben's last name wrong!) and the cassette is just a regular store bought 60 minute TDK. Both are in perfect shape. Due to the handmade nature of the packaging and the note that it was recorded live, it's totally possible that it was recorded live to this cassette and this is the only copy in existence.
The music is one long improvised piece with Chasny's signature guitar style interweaved with violin, the violin/guitar interplay somewhat reminicant of Michael Griffen's project Noggin. There is a brief break of vocals and then a long vicious blast of Sonny Sharrock-esque guitar/violin noise violence to end the piece.
liner notes read:
We sat for about 5 minutes - just looking at 'The Starry Night' gathering emotions from it. We then tried to recompose the painting using violin, electric guitar, and our voices as the medium rather than oil on canvas. We begin w/ a beautiful rolling, melodic feel, incorporating improvisation within the structure. As the piece moves on we keep the rolling feeling but add a weird demented feel, swirling and sick. We then break for vocals, which we imagined Van Gogh himself singing, and ended with a chaotic fit of noise representing his internal chaos and frustration with the own madness.
Aolani Beere - violin, vocals
Ben Chasney - electric guitar, vocals
Recorded live, April, 1995
This may be the only time this is ever up for sale...if you have any questions, please ask. Thanks!
