And of course cutting at 45 speed is the audiophile choice for the highes quality. A 45-RPM record is sonically superior to a 33 1/3 variety because of a 35 percent reduction of groove curvature compared to a 33 1/3 cut.. It means that while you can't fit as much music into a 45, the undukations of the groove that your cartridge has to track are stretched over a longer distance. For these reissues, the music was displaced onto four sides, meaning each side contains about 10 minutes of music.

The only way you'll get closer to this classic music is to listen to the master tapes or have been in the studio with the artist originally during the actual session.

You will be one of the last people in the world to own this 1st Edition Masterpiece.

Ben Webster, wrote the jazz historian J. E. Behrend, "was two men in one; in fast pieces he was a musician with a throaty croaking vibrato, while in slow ones he was a master of erotic and intensive ballads." In this compilation of both his own works and standard numbers with the promising title of Soulville, "Big Ben" shows the gentle and the rougher sides of his nature. No session in which black jazz musicians take part would be worth its salt without a good and honest opening blues number, as the first two tracks on this LP show.

Soulville is quintessential Ben Webster: intimate, tender, endlessly expressive. Webster was internationally recognized as one of jazz's elder statesman when he recorded this album in 1957, but the youthful fire that had marked his playing with the Duke Ellington Orchestra two decades earlier was undiminished. Leading a stellar combo through a program consisting mostly of vintage pop tunes, the great tenor saxophonist is at his peak. And this reissue includes three rare recordings of Webster on piano, the first instrument he played as a young professional musician.

"...these are all truly classic Verve titles that you simply don't want to miss...most importantly, the sound of these reissues is nothing short of astounding. Particularly the early Billie and Ella mono records are incredible treasures of sonic beauty. I'd definitely ask Santa for the whole set, or, if you want to cherry pick, the most classic titles. Whatever you decide, you owe yourself at least a half dozen!" Winner of a 2012 Positive Feedback Online Writers' Choice Award - Danny Kaey, Positive Feedback Online, November/December 2011

Ben Webster was considered to be one of the three most important 'swing tenors' next to Coleman Hawkins and Lester Young. His distinct style included a tough, raspy tone on stomps while playing with warmth and sentiment on ballads.

Ben Webster's final American recording was one of his greatest. At 55, the tenor saxophonist was still very much in his prime but considered out of style in the U.S. He would soon permanently move to Europe where he was better appreciated. Webster's tone has rarely sounded more beautiful than on "Someone To Watch Over Me" and "Our Love Is Here To Stay."

"What really defines this recording is its instrumental tonality, bass clarity and definition... Another amazing remastering from the team of Hoffman, Gray and Kassem and highly recommended! " - Myles B. Astor, Positive-Feedback. Issue 49

As critic Nat Hentoff makes clear, Coleman Hawkins and Ben Webster were larger than life. Formidable, even forbidding presences, they revealed a depth of feeling in their playing that spoke of their vast life experiences, as great writers or painters speak through their work.

In a way, the story of Ben Webster's saxophone career is the story of jazz music itself through decades of experience. Here we hear a blowing session that matches him with fellow tenorist Harold Ashby in a program of loose originals.

The forerunner of this LP, Ben Webster's Soulville was extremely successful, even for Verve standards. It was only logical, therefore, to invite Ben to a further studio session in New York in July 1958. But for the recording of The Soul Of Ben Webster, a completely different ensemble had been called together. The trumpeter Art Farmer - best known for Cool Jazz - along with Harold Ashby - a fellow musician from the Ellington crew - and the swinging rhythm group guarantee that "Big Ben" (as he was known) didn't lose his bearings during the superb harmonic progressions. "Chelsea Bridge," surely played in a thousand different ways by Duke Ellington's orchestra, is a real gem even when performed by a small ensemble, as here. All in all, this is a convincing medium-sized ensemble made up of remarkable protagonists whose improvisations are of the very highest caliber from beginning to end. And that opinion is still valid even 50 years later!
