BEN WEBSTER and ASSOCIATES

SEALED limited edition 180 gram Vinyl LP. Verve/Speakers Corner Records DVER 6056. Stereo, limited edition 180 gram reissue. COVER & VINYL: MINT still sealed, never played.

"Ben Webster and Associates is one of the loveliest albums put out in the past couple years by Speakers Corner...the sound is both creamy and sharp. That is, you hear the syrupy smoothness of the saxophones but also the bright brass of the trumpet and all the smacks and sizzle of the drumkit." - Fred Kaplan, Stereophile

If ever there was an LP to study the perfect art of swing tenor sax playing, then this must be it! In the '60s, fans of a rich, full sound coupled with a flowing style must have been thrilled when this LP by Ben Webster and his associates appeared on the market. Leonard Feather called the trio "heavy weights" and their massive sound certainly matches their corpulence. While it is difficult to single out just one of the musicians, it is easy to distinguish them: Ben (called "The Brute") plays with a raspy, vibrating sound; Coleman (known as "The Bear") is a master of flowing swing; and Budd has an earthy, resonant bluesy sound. The five numbers reflect the jam-like spontaneity of the 1959 session; an Ellington classic by the three in a masterful, inspirational new interpretation; three pieces which are intrinsically and hoc improvisations; and a classical ballad in which Ben Webster breathes warmth and sentiment into his instrument.

Ben Webster, Coleman Hawkins, Budd Johnson (tenor saxophone); Roy Eldridge (trumpet); Jimmy Jones (piano); Les Spann (guitar); Ray Brown (bass); Jo Jones (drums).

Recorded at Nola Recording Studio, New York, New York on April 9, 1959.

GRADING. Grading is visual only unless otherwise stated. I go by Goldmine standards and try to be conservative. I will play grade on certain items only - it is just impossible for me to play grade everything I put on EBAY. MINT means factory sealed, never opened or played. NM is opened but in visually brand new, out-of-the-packaging clean condition. NM- is not NM! Its a grade above VG++ and below Near Mint - it does not imply perfect. In my terminology Scratches are feeler type and Scuffs are just cosmetic and usually inaudible.

DISCLAIMER. Due to the number of frivolous returns which were unwarranted, and due to the nature of sound recorded products that can be easily copied, there will no longer be a free return policy. I will charge a $10.00 return fee for all returns - this amount will be deducted from the Paypal refund of the returned item. If item is truly defective the entire purchase amount will be refunded as long as the item is in the same condition as it was sent.
