This bebop era trombone sampler provides a perfect way to hear early sides by J.J. Johnson, Kai Winding, and Bennie Green. Johnson appropriately kicks thing off, demonstrating his innovative adaptation of Charlie Parker's bop language to the trombone. Joined by tenor saxophonist Sonny Rollins, trumpeter Kenny Dorham, pianist John Lewis, and drummer Max Roach, Johnson works through four up-tempo cuts, including the self-penned "Fox Hunt" and "Opus V." Lewis and Dorham contribute a cut apiece and join the rest of the group in turning in many fine and fluid solos. Winding, who at first took cues from Johnson, avails himself admirably on four tracks here as well, keeping with the up-tempo groove on his original number "A Night on Bop Mountain" and Gerry Mulligan's "Waterworks." Along with Mulligan on baritone, Winding is supported by tenor saxophonist Brew Moore, pianist George Wallington, and drummer Roy Haynes, whose depth-charge bass drum accents particularly standout. In contrast to the bebop mold both Johnson and Winding fitted into, Green stuck mostly to a big band and R&B vein, sidestepping many of Parker and Dizzy Gillespie's innovations in favor of a more traditional, yet no less swinging sound. Sparked by the honking intensity of Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis' tenor solos and Art Blakey's busy, yet tight drumming, Green blazes through four cuts as well, mixing intense, grainy solos with more fluid and rounded statements. Both his duel with Davis on "Whirl-A-Licks" and the fine rendition of "Pennies From Heaven" deserve particular recognition.

(IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded!; we  grade records under the strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight)

(a)          WE GRADE THE VINYL AS STRONG VERY GOOD+(+) . CAUTION: The vinyl is NOT MINT or NEAR MINT, but is nevertheless in a very nice and clean condition. There are some surface marks and abrasions, mostly light and superficial, although some may be longer than 1.1/4 inches (1 inch = 2.5 centimeters)

(b)          The record has a "deep groove" (an indent in the label about 1/2-inch from the edge of the label, which on SOME labels is associated with very early or first pressings).

(c)           The record has a ►Rudy Van Gelder name, or  his initials (RVG) stamped or hand-etched in the trail-off vinyl (dead wax). On SOME  Jazz labels (Blue Note, Savoy, Regent, Prestige, Impulse, Verve…) this stamp signifies highly professional masterings either done by - or  personally authorized by - the legendary engineer himself.

(d)          The record is apparently pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(e)           Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

·       COVER:

THE COVER IS ABOUT VERY GOOD+ (VG+)

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-        A visible water stain affects the area about 1/2 inch wide along the top sea, (VISIBLE PRACTICALLY ONLY ON FRONT SIDE); there is no structural damage to the cover, and both cardboard base and paper slick are intact, however, the stain is visible

-         Cover has a partially split bottom seam (between 2 and 4 inches  / 5 to 10 centimeters)

-         Cover has a minor 'bump' (dent) on the spine

-         Cover has some visible fraying/tattering on the bottom seam

-         Cover has some light ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and  10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 4

-         Back cover has circular tarnish (grayish, dust-covered sections, which closely follow the contour of the record),  probably caused by friction or by rubbing against other covers during the storage. The tarnish is similar in appearance to a common ring wear, but, UNLIKE ring wear, these grayish areas may be possible to clean up with a minor effort and with a right cleansing solution.

-         Cover shows considerable yellowing on both sides, apparently from aging.

-         Cover has a few tiny wrinkles along the spine

-         Cover has all four corners slightly worn / dinged / bent. (nothing significant)

-         Back cover has a few yellowish dust speckles scattered here and there (these tiny spots are not overly obtrusive or distracting)

-         Cover has a small quality control (inspection) stamp on the back panel

-         Back cover has some small writing (price) in plain PENCIL on its back side, which can be easily and effortlessly erased.

NO OTHER IMPERFECTIONS ON THE COVER:

-        No cut-out (drill) holes.

-        No cut-out corners

-        No saw-marks or indents

-        No peel-off marks

-        No mold or mildew spots

-        No stickers or labels

-        No water damage

-        No razor marks, scratches, pressure marks, lines, streaks, or  cuts.

-        No warping

-        No wax, glue, paint or liquid drops on the cover

-        No glue traces or wax residue.

-        No bar codes

-        No RIAA stamps or stickers.
