Bennie Moten's Kansas City Orchestra was the most successful jazz band of the Midwest. The band toured all over the country and had a top selling recording in 1927 for Victor named "South". In 1929 Count Basie of The Blue Devils joined the band, and several other members of that band soon joined Moten's Orchestra. After Moten's death in 1935, the Count took over and morphed the band into his own outfit over the next year.
This pair of songs are from the band’s first ever recording session, held in St. Louis in September of 1923. At the time the group was comprised of Lammar Wright on clarinet, Thamon Hayes on trombone, Woody Walder on clarinet, Sam Tall on banjo, and Willie Hall on drums.
While Moten’s later records sometimes turn up, these really early ones can be quite elusive, and tell a story of how his band changed in style over the ensuing five years – and you can’t get an earlier one than this – his first ever !
