Album Review: Benny Golson rose to prominence in the 1950s, not only as a tenor saxophonist of the warm-toned traditional school, but also as a composer, many of whose works have become jazz standards. After a long and successful career as a composer for television on the West Coast, Golson has returned to New York, where he is once again, an important tenor soloist and co-leader (with Art Farmer) of the Jazztet. These sessions, played by a quintet and a nine-piece band, are among the most representative examples of his early work. Of special interest is one of his own versions of the tune that has since been recorded by countless groups all over the world, "Whisper Not."
