Benny Golson's second album as a leader  is a solid hard bop date featuring the tenorman in a quintet with trumpeter Kenny Dorham, pianist Wynton Kelly, bassist Paul Chambers and drummer Max Roach. The all-star group performs three Golson originals (none of which really caught on), a pair of Gigi Gryce tunes (best known is "Hymn to the Orient") and the standard "Namely You." Excellent playing on the set that defines the modern mainstream of 1958 jazz.

Though this album shows up in a collection of Wynton Kelly's work 1951-1961, it's a showcase for neither Wynton nor the hyper-industrious Golson (who was fully engaged as a composer and record producer for Blue Note as well as a soloist in Blakey's Jazz Messengers and in the ensemble he formed with Art Farmer). But the memorable moments on this album are the solos by Kenny Dorham and a "mystery" trombonist unmentioned in AllMusic's notes introducing the album. Whenever I hear Curtis Fuller play, I'm left wondering if he could be mistaken for the great J.J. Johnson. But listening to the trombonist on this album--the attack, the phrasing, the note choices--there was never a doubt in my mind: only one player in modern jazz could sound like that: J. J. himself. He's to the trombone what Miles is to the trumpet--playing Charlie Parker without the least hint of extra fat or wasted space. The steely intensity can be heard in both players, but in place of Miles' laconic roughness J. J. brings to the music an extra note of unmistakable elegance supported by a musical voice distinctive for its eloquence.

(a)          WE GRADE THE VINYL AS EXCELLENT. This is one of those albums that are somewhat difficult to grade. It is somewhere between VG++ and NEAR MINT, just a notch below NEAR MINT. A few light abrasions ARE visible, but they are extremely shallow, superficial  and only moderately visually distracting (nothing significant).For the most part, the vinyl looks impeccable without any MAJOR visual flaws or imperfections. Much of the original luster is intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.

(b)          The record has a "deep groove" (an indent in the label about 1/2-inch from the edge of the label, which on SOME labels is associated with very early or first pressings).

(c)           The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(d)          The album comes with its original, 'rice paper' inner sleeve (typically used in the 50’s and very early 60’s) which has - apparently with success - shielded the vinyl from the harmful impact of elements over many years! We believe that, despite great technological progress, these early 'rice paper' inner sleeves provided a degree of protection MUCH HIGHER than any other material used ever since.

(e)           Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

(f)            Stereo copies of this album are NOT known to exist.

·       COVER (THIS IS THE ORIGINAL, LAMINATED, GLOSSY COVER):

THE COVER IS ABOUT VERY GOOD+(+)

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-        A visible water stain affects about 25% of the back panel; there is no structural damage to the cover, and both cardboard base and paper slick are intact, however, the stain is visible

-        Cover has some writing on its back side (name of the previous owner written in blue ballpoint pen, about 1/4 x 2  inches in size); his initials also appear in one top corner.

-        Cover has some ring wear.  On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and  10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 1  (front side) and 5 (back side).

-        Back cover has circular tarnish (grayish, dust-covered sections, which closely follow the contour of the record),  probably caused by friction or by rubbing against other covers during the storage. The tarnish is similar in appearance to a common ring wear, but, UNLIKE ring wear, these grayish areas may be possible to clean up with a minor effort and with a right cleansing solution.

-        Cover shows considerable yellowing on both sides, apparently from aging.

-        Cover has a few tiny wrinkles along the spine  (BARELY VISIBLE)

-        Cover has three corners slightly worn (nothing significant)

-        Front cover has a few yellowish dust speckles scattered here and there (these tiny spots are not overly obtrusive or distracting)
