Hammer Film Productions remains one of the 20th Century's most iconic cult movie institutions. Founded in 1934, the studio originally set out with a broad genre remit - its first release was a comedy, and the first decade included a retelling of the Mary Celeste maritime mystery - but by the 1950s the brand was synonymous with Gothic horror and dark fantasy. Styles which would define most of the output throughout the years between then and now. 1957's The Curse of Frankenstein was one of countless scaries the institution put out around the same time, and called on regular soundtrack don James Bernard for the music (whose other credits include The Quatermass Xperiment and Dracula). Filled with atmospheric, slow-burn, Romantic orchestral movements, often rising from tense refrain to sudden crescendo before collapsing under the weight of their own strings, the score is a prime example of both the era and production house.
