DESCRIPTION

“Beryl Davis” London Records LA-9 from 1948. Super Hard To Find Original 3x78 10” Shellac Record Album Set from Female Big Band / Jazz Vocalist Beryl Davis with help from Stephane Grapelli and George Shearing. Beryl Davis was a British-born Jazz and Big Band singer. Born in Plymouth, England to Harry Lomax Davis and Queenie Davis, she began to sing for her father's band, sang with the jazz guitarist Django Rheinhardt and his Quintet of the Hot Club of France at 12, traveling with a chaperon and became popular singing for British and Allied troops during World War II. Glenn Miller discovered her in London, and she sang for the Army Air Force Orchestra. At Bob Hope’s urging She moved to Los Angeles after the war with her father's big band, and appeared with Frank Sinatra for one year on Your Hit Parade. She was part of The Four Girls singing group, with Jane Russell, Rhonda Fleming, Della Russell and Connie Haines. She also appeared both in variety shows and films and continued her singing career up into the 2000s. The songs featured in this set were all recorded during the World War II era between 1939 and 1943. During the earlier part of this period, she had toured England with the Stephane Grapelly group which featured George Shearing. All of these recordings were made with The Grapelly Sextet and Shearing except the first disc which was made with Art Young and his Quintet which also features Grapelly.

CONDITION

The album shows basic rubbing wear from storage. There is a small (price sticker?) peel on the upper front. There is some “age spotting” on the inside of the album. There is about a 1” split in the top of the spine and about 2” at the bottom. Despite all that, the album is still very solid with no other splits, tears, writing, etc. and nothing that affects the Artwork. Should rate a VG overall. The discs themselves are in super condition looking  like it has not been played much at all! There are a few light scuffs but nothing that comes close to qualifying as an actual scratch. Judging by the overall clean, glossy condition and the lack of any visible spindle trails on the labels, I doubt that they were ever played much at all. Should easily rate VG+ and quite possibly even VG++ (or EX if you prefer).

Records are graded to the best of my ability to Goldmine Visual standards. If you are not familiar with this grading system (or even if you think you are!), please check it out before bidding I have summarized the important (i.e. I think everyone knows what Mint means) points below in Goldmine's words:
Very Good Plus (VG+): Record surfaces may show some slight signs of wear and may have slight scuffs or very light scratches that don't affect one's listening experience. Slight warps that do not affect the sound are OK.
Very Good (VG): Surface noise will be evident upon playing,... Groove wear will start to be noticeable, as will light scratches (deep enough to feel with a fingernail) that will affect the sound.
I stand by my grades but would like us to be on the same page so no problems arise. I have been selling Vintage Vinyl for over twenty years on the net and I can count the returns I've had on one hand so I believe my grading is fair and accurate. One important note, I try to grade to these Goldmine guides as best as I can understand and apply them. This gives us both a written standard to go by rather than having to guess. But.... it also means that I don't issue refunds over differences of opinion in grading i.e. "That's not MY idea of a VG record!" - I don't know what your standards are and, as such, can't grade to them. I guarantee that items I sell will meet my description, nothing more or less!
