We recently returned from a Rust Belt vinyl and music memorabilia excursion and unearthed this absolutely incredible gem.   Written just two years before his death, Big Bill addresses his old friend Mikey Leven (?) and of particular note, describes his upcoming debut performance at a new venue after his return from France: Gate of Horn. This famed club was a 100-seat folk music venue in the basement of the Rice Hotel, in the Gold Coast / Near North Side of Chicago. And, in fact, Gate of Horn opened up in July 1956, right around when this letter was postmarked.
The envelope has wear, as seen in the photos. The paper on which the letter was written is very thin, and appears as if torn from a journal. However, while the crease is defined, there are no splits along it. There is edge wear as seen in the photo. Please zoom in on and study these photos to see greater detail of both the envelope and letter. The envelope is 5 3/4" across by 4 1/4". Actual letter is about 5 1/2" across by 8".
