Album Notes ...........
Big Star - # 1 Record (200g, Clarity Vinyl) ...............................................
Big Star was founded in 1971 by Chris Bell and Alex Chilton (Box Tops!). The band had no great success despite their first-class quality, their powerful power rock was too much associated with the Beach Boys and the Beatles, although musically they have very little to do with these bands. It was not until much later that they received the attention of the public when their first three LPs were included in Rolling Stone's list of the best 500 albums of all time. No wonder, as these top-notch, blues-rooted mainstream rock discs offer sparkling clean guitar playing and harmony vocals reminiscent of bands like "Allman Brothers" or "The Byrds". Also fans of The Who will rediscover popular elements here! .................
In 1999, the first two LPs ("No. 1 Record" was released in April 1972 and "Radio City" February 1974) by Akarma were reissued and now come from Classic Records new audiophile releases on the new Clarity Vinyl. Thus, even extremely demanding LP-friends can marvel at what you can get out of the original tapes with the corresponding effort! ...........................................

‘In The Street’ from #1 Record
Bell’s revolving door of accomplices included Jody Stephens and future Big Star bassist Andy Hummel, while he already knew Chilton, who had enjoyed major success (starting with 1967 US No.1/ UK no.5 single ‘The Letter’) as the teen frontman of blue-eyed soulsters The Box Tops. An archetypal ‘army brat’, Chilton had knocked heads with the band’s controlling producers/songwriters, bailed, made an entertainingly wayward record, equal parts soul, pop, country and folk, which failed to get a deal; he ended up in New York, meeting Byrds frontman Roger McGuinn and writing some exquisite folky rock songs with a Byrds/McGuinn bent, before accepting Bell’s invitation to join forces in Big Star, named after a local supermarket chain and with not a little self-belief.The net result was #1 Record, the first great American power pop record, produced with sparkling, crystalline clarity by Ardent chief John Fry, Big Star’s very own George Martin. But what made it all the more interesting were Bell and Chilton’s tricky egos, stroppy personalities and a fondness for prescription drugs – mostly ‘downers’ Valium and Mandrax, as heroin and cocaine were much harder to source in Memphis: Hummel summarised his time in Big Star as, “turmoil, intense, driven creativity and discomfort.”
This state of mind/play fed into Big Star’s sound: a crunchier, sour-sweet New Wave feel years before it became a trend. The Bell-Chilton co-write ‘In The Street’ was a case in point, a wiry, urgent hormonal celebration of teen delinquency – both men were already experienced, but they were still, essentially, naïve and – living the rock’n’roll dream – living like kids. Nearly 20 years later, the song – covered by Cheap Trick, albeit with references to joints removed, became the theme to US TV sitcom That ‘70s Show.
********************************************************************************************************************
Seemingly snake-bit from the start, Big Star's pure creative side exploded with their first two albums, both of which would eventually become icons of American Power Pop. This Memphis foursome, originally founded by Chris Bell in 1971 and joined shortly thereafter by the legendary chameleon Alex Chilton, would suffer due to personnel issues and distribution problems by their label, delaying their place in musical history. One of the ultimate cult bands in popular music, #1 Record and Radio City would both influence artists-to-come such as Tom Petty, R.E.M., The Replacements and The Bangles, to name just a few. Both titles placed within Rolling Stone magazine's poll of The 500 Greatest Albums Of All Time. ......................************************************************************************************************
Eight years earlier in 1964, when their home town of Memphis, Tennessee became a tour stop for The Beatles, primary songwriters Alex Chilton and Chris Bell were thirteen years old. Heavily influenced by the UK band, the pair—Bell in particular—wanted to model their songwriting on the Lennon–McCartney partnership, with the result that they credited as many songs as possible on Big Star's debut album to "Bell/Chilton".[5] In practice, they developed material incrementally in the studio, each making changes to the other's recordings. Drummer Jody Stephens recalled, "Alex would come in and put down something rough and edgy and Chris would come in and add some sweet-sounding background vocals to it."[6] Chilton once offered the following on Chris Bell's unique vocal contributions: "Chris and I did all the harmony vocals, and he had a brilliant mind that worked in a sort of contrapuntal way. It wasn't based so much on 'Oh you're singing the root. I should be singing the 3rd above.' he would just sing along with the line I was singing. He was a brilliant, instinctual maker of counterpoint." [7]
The pair also each contributed songs to the album that were individually composed before Big Star was formed. Chris Bell brought the songs "Feel", "My Life Is Right", and "Try Again" to the recording sessions, which he had previously recorded with a band called 'Rock City' (which featured Big Star drummer Jody Stephens and Steve Rhea), and Chilton brought "The Ballad of El Goodo", "In the Street", and the acoustic ballads "Thirteen" and "Watch the Sunrise".[8] "The India Song" was written and composed by Andy Hummel.[9]
#1 Record is the only Big Star album on which group founder Chris Bell is officially credited as a member. Bell had a major hand in the record through songwriting, vocals, guitar work and the album's production. The polished sound of #1 Record, in contrast to the more raw styles of the band's subsequent albums, Radio City and Third/Sister Lovers, is attributed by producer John Fry to the presence of Bell: "When Chris Bell was still in the band, he took more interest than anybody in the production and technology end of things. He had a good production mind...the reason why the second album is rougher, with fewer harmonies, is due to the absence of Chris's influence in the studio."[10] Bassist Andy Hummel would also credit Bell with having a hand in the album's production: "Chris was in charge. I would pretty well credit him with recording and producing that LP [#1 Record]. Of course, he had a lot of artistic help from Alex [Chilton] but Chris was the technical brains behind it. He was the only one of us at that time who knew how to record." [11] Alex Chilton would also acknowledge Bell's heavy role in the studio production: "Chris was really into recording. He didn't want the rest of us fooling around in the studio, that was his business."[7] Chilton would also give producer John Fry credit for being achieving the album's high-level of production quality: "John Fry was a genius in his way of mixdowns. We didn't put things on tape much differently then was the standard method of doing things, but he just had such finesse and great ears, and he was just a great meticulous mixdown engineer and producer. [...] He's the one responsible for making those records sound so fucking great." [7] In 2014 the album was re-released through Stax Records with liner notes by Mike Mills.[12] (WIKIPEDIA).....................
Reviewer: Preston The SVP-II Clarity vinyl formulation (almost clear) is stupendously quiet, much more so than any other type of vinyl I've listened to. Amazingly silent: instruments and voices explode from a jet black background. Regarding Classic's pressing quality (mentioned by another reviewer), I haven't had the same experience. This title had a single pop. Period. Otherwise, no record noise at all. I wish all other (audiophile) pressings used this type of vinyl. My experience has been that colored (but translucent) or clear vinly sounds noticably quieter than black vinyl. Any record that costs over $30 should be required to use this stuff - or clear vinyl - because it makes a huge difference.
The music speaks for itself: brilliant.

Big Star - #1 Record (200 g, Clarity Vinyl)...........................
.................

[12] (WIKIPEDIA) .....
