Description
Lady's last studio recording and also, I think, her finest for Norman Granz's Clef & Verve labels, due in no small part to Granz's superb selection of accompanying musicians and song titles. All the artists are locked in to the same sweet mellow groove and the music just seems to float on a gentle breeze. In addition, Holiday's voice is in fine form, not at all rough, harsh, raspy or slurred, typical of her later years, but retains a bit of that sweetness and purity from her earlier years. Her timing and phrasing are spot on. This is a record that you can listen to over and over again and never tire of.
The record is graded VG, but plays better than you might expect, very clear crisp sound quality with only a small amount of light surface noise. Cover shows notable surface wear with wear around the edges and a strange "X" shaped cut in the upper left corner, but no cut in the inner sleeve. Also the original inner sleeve has the correct catalog number for this record written in marker twice on both sides. Leads me to think that this might have been some kind of promo or distributors copy.
These sessions were recorded Jan, 3,4,7&9 of1957 at Capitol Studios in Los Angeles and feature Jimmy Rowles (p), Ben Webster (ts), Barney Kessel (g), Harry "Sweets" Edison (tp), Red Mitchell (b) & Alvin Stoller or Larry Bunker on drums.
