Songs for Distingué Lovers is an album by jazz singer Billie Holiday released in 1957 on Verve Records. It was originally available in both mono, catalogue number MGV 8257, and stereo, catalog number MGVS 6021. It was recorded at Capitol Studios in Los Angeles from January 3 to January 9, 1957, and produced by Norman Granz.

Granz and Holiday chose familiar items from the Great American Songbook of classic pop for the album, Holiday singing in the context comfortable for her, that of a small jazz band. The original album consisted of six standards, five of which by songwriters who would be categorically tackled by Ella Fitzgerald on her Songbooks series. The sessions reunited Holiday with trumpeter Harry Edison and saxophonist Ben Webster, both of whom the singer had worked with during the 1930 and 1940s, Edison as a member of the Count Basie Orchestra during her brief stay as the band's girl singer, and Webster from the recordings under her own name for Vocalion Records and Okeh Records.

Songs for Distingué Lovers forms part of the last series of extensive small-group recordings that Lady Day would make in the studio. Although her voice was largely shot at this point, she puts so much feeling into the lyrics that it's easy to overlook her dark sound. The band is a major asset, and made up of all-stars: trumpeter Harry "Sweets" Edison, tenor saxophonist Ben Webster, pianist Jimmie Rowles, guitarist Barney Kessel, bassist Red Mitchell, and Alvin Stoller or Larry Bunker on drums. There are plenty of short solos for Edison, Webster, and Kessel. Holiday does her best on such numbers as "A Foggy Day," "One for My Baby," "Just One of Those Things," and "I Didn't Know What Time It Was," and there are plenty of haunting moments, even if one could tell (even at the time) that the end was probably drawing near for the singer.

THE GODDESS of blues/jazz sings her heart out on this album out with such unprecedented intensity and genuine, heartfelt emotion, that you will be left standing before your speakers, stunned and mesmerized, unable to move. This is not an album; this is a torrential rainstorm of emotions, affections, heartaches, longing…think of this timeless 1958 Norman Granz-produced masterpiece as a monsoon of human feeling. And, that is only a beginning. The most beautiful side of this album is its SOUND. Lady Day's voice sounds as if her vocal cords are somehow directly connected to your eardrum (via an optical fiber or high speed modem, shall we say). Her voice literally becomes a part of your inner soundscape. An eerie listening experience, not to be missed. This 1958 album captures Billie Holiday in the midst of her downward slide; with her voice still intact and potent, and with the intensity of her self-destructive lifestyle and emotions just beginning to show. Billie sings a variety of standards and evergreens, backed by a jazz combo of some of the best, and most competent, jazz musicians of the day. (a)          WE GRADE THE VINYL AS STRONG VERY GOOD+(+) . CAUTION: The vinyl is NOT MINT or NEAR MINT, but is nevertheless in a very nice and clean condition. There are some surface marks and abrasions, mostly light and superficial, although some may be longer than 1.1/4 inches (1 inch = 2.5 centimeters)

(b)          The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(c)           The record has a "deep groove" (an indent in the label about 1/2-inch from the edge of the label, which on SOME labels is associated with very early or first pressings).

(d)          Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

·                               THE COVER

THE COVER IS NICE --- ABOUT VERY GOOD++ (VG++).

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-        Front cover has a  rectangular, sticker residue (small yellowish discoloration from the removed price sticker)

-        Cover has a four (4) small, faded, radio station WNEW  stamps on the back panel

-        Cover has some light ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and  10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 3 (slight loss of sheen noted on back panel)

-        Cover shows JUST A HINT of yellowing on back side, apparently from aging.

-        Visible shelf wear noted on the top seam

-        Cover has two corners slightly worn / frayed / bent (just a beginning of the split seam)
