THE GODDESS of blues/jazz sings her heart out on this album out with such unprecedented intensity and genuine, heartfelt emotion, that you will be left standing before your speakers, stunned and mesmerized, unable to move. This is not an album; this is a torrential rainstorm of emotions, affections, heartaches, longing…think of this timeless 1954 Norman Granz-produced masterpiece as a monsoon of human feeling. Lady Day's voice sounds as if her vocal cords are somehow directly connected to your eardrum (via an optical fiber or high speed modem, shall we say). Her voice literally becomes a part of your inner soundscape. An eerie listening experience, not to be missed. This 1954 pressing of the album captures Billie Holiday at the VERY PEAK of her vocal prowess, with her voice still intact and potent, and with the intensity of her self-destructive lifestyle and emotions still years away. Billie sings a variety of standards and evergreens, backed  by a jazz combo of some of the best, and most competent, jazz musicians of the day such as Oscar Peterson, Barney Kassel, Charlie Shavers and many other. But, mostly, the lady sings like the day of her demise is infinitely far away (it wasn't - a mere five years down the road, Lady Day would be no more).  (IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded!; we  grade records under the strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight)

(a)          WE GRADE THE VINYL  AS  NEAR MINT. Some VERY LIGHT AND SUPERFICIAL abrasions – mostly sleeve scuffs -  are (barely) visible, but are probably inaudible,  and do not affect visual integrity or beauty of the vinyl. The original luster is very much intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.

(b)          The album comes with its original, 'rice paper' inner sleeve (typically used in the 50’s and very early 60’s) which has - apparently with success - shielded the vinyl from the harmful impact of elements over many years! We believe that, despite great technological progress, these early 'rice paper' inner sleeves provided a degree of protection MUCH HIGHER than any other material used ever since.

(c)           The record has a "deep groove" (an indent in the label about 1/2-inch from the edge of the label, which on SOME labels is associated with very early or first pressings).

(d)          The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(e)           Mono pressing of this title is much rarer, and by far more  preferable to its FAKE ("electronically rechannelled") stereo counterpart. We estimate that FAKE stereo copies of this album outnumber monos by a ratio of at least 10:1.

(f)            Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

(g)          True Stereo copies of this album are NOT known to exist.

·       COVER (THIS IS THE ORIGINAL, LAMINATED, GLOSSY COVER):

THE COVER IS NICE --- ABOUT VERY GOOD+(+)

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-        The previous owner taped the bottom seam with a piece of 1-inch wide paper packaging tape (along the entire length of the seam); from what we have been able to determine, the tape can easily be removed, but we did not attempt to. (PLEASE NOTE: THE SEAM DOES NOT APPEAR TO BE SPLIT -- APPARENTLY, THE PREVIOUS OWNER TAPED THE SEAM AS A PRECAUTIONARY MEASURE)

-         Cover has some light ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and  10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 2  (front side) and 4 (back side)

-         Back cover has circular tarnish (grayish, dust-covered sections, which closely follow the contour of the record),  probably caused by friction or by rubbing against other covers during the storage. The tarnish is similar in appearance to a common ring wear, but, UNLIKE ring wear, these grayish areas may be possible to clean up with a minor effort and with a right cleansing solution.

-         Cover shows some yellowing on both sides, apparently from aging.

-         Visible shelf wear noted on the seams

-         Cover has a partially split top seam (less than 1 inch / 2.5 centimeters)

-         Cover has a partially split spine (less than 1 inch / 2.5 centimeters)

-         Cover has some fraying/wear along the spine  (nothing significant)

-         Cover has some tiny, faint writing on its back side (a microscopic price code written in one corner)

-         Back cover has a sticker residue (partially peeled remnants of the price sticker or some other sticker; the buyer can probably remove these small,

-         The cover has a few tiny scratch marks on the front side   (nothing significant)

-         Back cover has a few yellowish dust speckles scattered here and there (these tiny spots are not overly obtrusive or distracting)

NO OTHER IMPERFECTIONS ON THE COVER:

-        No cut-out (drill) holes.

-        No cut-out corners

-        No saw-marks or indents

-        No wrinkles or creases

-        No stamps

-        No mold or mildew spots

-        No water damage

-        No warping

-        No wax, glue, paint or liquid drops on the cover

-        No glue traces or wax residue.

-        No bar codes

-        No RIAA stamps or stickers.
