Description
Lovely copy of the legendary original issue of Billie Holiday's Strange Fruit / Fine and Mellow on Commodore 526. This is the 1944 pressing with the 42nd Street address. One of the all-time classic songs of the jazz era, a chilling image of the horrors of lynching -- here in its perfect original form. absolutely a beautiful recording and performance, and this copy really brings out all the magic. There is a touch of light wear, with a few superficial scuffs, but it plays absolutely gorgeously with barely the slightest surface noise. On the Strange Fruit side there is a scuff that goes through the label itself, and reaches the inner grooves of the music (see photo), but it does not affect the play in the least. I don't hear any interference at all. This is a beautiful sounding copy, and one of the great treasures of 20th century music.
