THE ULTIMATE BILLY FURY RARITY
IT'S AS RARE AS ROCKING HORSE S**T
This Legendary 1962 "Play It Cool" DFE 6708 Export EP is the same one that was featured on page 156 in the September 1997 issue no. 217 of Record Collector (a copy of the mag. is included in this auction).The record was sold shortly after in a Record Collector auction.
I won't rewrite all the article featured in Record Collector, I'll just give you the highlights.
The EP was found in Mombasa Kenya by a collector from Manchester - and although the sleeve was printed in the UK by RECORD PAC and features a unique coloured shot of Billy - the record appears to have been pressed in Africa for DECCA, this is supported by the lack of "Made In The UK" around the centre label.
THE COVER Is in generally very good condition with just light creasing here and there - the odd dint and scratch - the spine has some wear on the left edge - the back cover is slightly grubby and as you can see from the scans there is BY AIRMAIL ASSAND BOX 414 PHONE 8118 printed on the top and a tick plus 16 circled in red biro also. There are no rips or pieces missing in the cover.
The Export cover differs slightly from normal UK issue in that RECORD PAC is printed below THE DECCA RECORD COMPANY, LONDON, ENGLAND instead of Printed in England by Robert Stace - plus the normal issue has the Title and matrix number down the right hand side of the cover.
THE RECORD If you are not familiar with the EP all the tracks are uptempo and the sound quality is nice and bright with only the odd pop ( I have played it with a light pickup), it is only in the gaps between tracks and the run out that you hear some surface noise this is because the record has lots of surface scratches - there are no jumps or skips and it is not warped. As you can see from the photos the centre is missing and there are also some initials written on the left hand side of side 1.
The record centre label differs from the usual UK issue in several ways - the most obvious are TRUE HIGH FIDELITY & B.I.E.M. are missing on the left hand side and the 4 tracks have the running times at the end of the songwriters credits.
The EP has been examined by several Billy Fury experts and they all agree that it is genuine - the cover has even been checked under a microscope and the unique coloured picture of Billy has definitely not been stuck on.
