After four decades together, Atlanta-formed The Black Crowes sound most alive when they stop polishing and start reacting. Recorded quickly with Jay Joyce, the songs feel worked out in the room, guitars pushed a little too loud, drums left slightly ahead of the beat. 'Profane Prophecy' kicks things off with a crooked strut, its riff tugged and bent rather than squared off. 'Pharmacy Chronicles' slows the pace, sitting in a thick groove that lets the lyric grind its way through. There's blues in the bones here, but it's delivered with grit and impatience, a band leaning into friction and enjoying the scrape.
