When Black Lips first stomped onto the scene back in the mid-noughties, they frankly never seemed the sorts to be unleashing a full-length concept saga on the general populace. Yet this 19-track (!) effort is exactly that, and whilst the Nuggets-derived bratty garage-rock ramalama by which they made their name is very much on the agenda here, this is the most diverse and far-reaching platter the lads have thus far attempted, taking in psychedelia, piano ballads and electronic embellishments without losing any of the chutzpah or rogueish charm by which they made their name. On this evidence, the Lips are both having their cake and eating it.
