• Other Info: A mysterious, intriguing, and quite beautiful album. I believe Black Orpheus is a group that formed as part of the Newbury Park High School music program, and they perform a combination of folk and rock songs here. By my count, they do six covers but they also do nine originals. Even some of the covers are non-obvious choices (George Harrison’s “All Things Must Pass” and John Lennon’s “Love”) and their predictable cover of “Fire and Rain” is probably the best I’ve heard. But the originals are what really make this album shine for me. They’re mainly folk and soft-rock songs, accompanied by guitar, bass, electric and acoustic piano, Clavinet, and even brass used sparingly on a few selections. Most songs feature a vocal soloist with some choir background vocals. (Given that this is a school band, it’s hard to imagine that there wouldn’t be some group vocals.) What I especially like about the originals is that they tend to have a hippy folk vibe to them—hardly surprising, given when this was released. This is a scarce album; I’ve only ever seen two other copies offered for sale, and one of those was a copy I sold not long ago. Here’s a link to one of the tracks:
