Label Conditions: Both very clean, fresh and attractive with any handling traces to what are revealing surfaces, minimal and faint. The same for any of the tiny few spindle marks, and all evidence, including superb sound quality assure, this has hardly been played.

Brief Info: Brilliant fifth album from the masters of metal gloom and the album that really got them noticed by the masses. Slightly more commercial and more accessible for many non-fans, this album really took the band into the rock super-league and boosted sales of the earlier classics. With more use of varied instruments the songs are still dark but not as doomy and bleak as previous. The instrumental ‘Fluff’ is a beautiful delicate piece with Iommi switching his heavy guitar riffs to a more sensitive acoustic guitar and beautiful harpsichord. Ozzy again in tremendous form and the title track has long become a rock classic and a firm favourite on digital radio’s ‘Planet Rock’. Of late, this album has become increasingly hard to find, especially copies with the lyric inner and a record that plays nigh-on perfectly. The cover is horribly prone to all forms of wear and the lyric inner is often split (if even present at all). The heavy rock sound is never heard better than on vinyl, it carries the power and punch that is vital for this form of music and this example will not be beaten easily. Although not a very first issue, the sheer power of the sound and detail in this heavily pressed copy more than compensates. So get those amps warmed up and rock yourself away with this true rock classic – no one ever did it better than Black Sabbath.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT: an unlaminated gatefold format with matt, smooth surfaces. Printed and made in England by Howard’s with the ‘super de luxe’ text on the rear top right corner. Includes the lyric inner sleeve.

Cover Front: One of rock’s classic front covers but highly prone to wear. This has only light traces of rubbing near the sides and none of the heavy overall rubbing so many seem to acquire over the years. Most of any marks gentle and faint as seen more critically under angled light and little detracts from this fine example. A few fine and light edge surface creases and retaining deep colour, so just enough to remind of it’s considerable age, but still setting a very fine standard of attractiveness.

Cover Back: In contrast the to the black, this has a lot of white, hence often seen grubby. Any traces here are very light and few. The bottom right corner has a crease with few others. The lack of deep penetrating or darkened ring wear is always a bonus on a cover that is very prone.

Cover Inner Gatefold: Very clean and impressive with little to fault.

Top & Bottom Edges: Any rubbing up to the corner tips is very light and little, minimal traces to the top at all and all remain straight.

Right Edge(s), and Type: The front has a real folded edge which has little wear and still straight. The back opening is clean, sharp with barely any traces of wear and guaranteed untrimmed.

Spine and Text: Quite solid and thick, it so often darkens and tones badly. Minimal compression with a couple of creases that show little. All text is perfect and unworn and still retaining a fine whiteness with any grubbiness very light and little.

Corners: Any tip rubbing small and light with very fine to excellent shape retained.

Cover Summary: A strong all-round example of this quite unforgiving 70’s cover. With far less wear than many seen, it could prove difficult to find significantly better. This classic cover should please many collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: NEAR EXCELLENT: this is the thin card version, still unlined and more durable than the ultra flimsy paper versions. Lightly aged with traces of toning, but very few creases and all edges unsplit with no repairs. Side two has a few marks near the right edge, possibly ink smudges in manufacture, but that only a guess. Still a fine example of an inner that often seems to go missing.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(++): and only the odd tiny paper mark of my highest Mint(-) grading. A very impressive visual copy that is very clean, shiny, intense black and very solidly pressed, especially as many are 20 grams or more lighter and flimsy. A copy hardly played on all the evidence and that is very unusual on this popular rock classic. The odd gentle paper mark apart, any surface traces are almost minuscule, this impressive for a hard unlined inner that often mark records so freely. Visually a super record that should please most-all collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This lovely record plays up to it’s high visual grading with practically nothing to fault. Strong, very powerful, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. PLAY THIS ONE LOUD FOR MAXIMUM ENJOYMENT!! Any surface sounds barely even registered and no pops or clicks were noted and this is an exceptional clean pressing. The biggest test on this one is the aforementioned ‘Fluff’. A delicate acoustic instrumental with plenty of harpsichord and piano this so often clips and crackles on less than worthy pressings or less than carefully played examples. Here all is crisp and very sharp and sounds impressive. All the details on this critical track are captured on this WWA pressing and little compares. Few copies will outperform this very clean copy I feel sure, this was a pleasure from start to finish and the awesome power of the best metal band ever are encaptured in these ultra clean unworn grooves. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been clearly carefully handled. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. This record will prove difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
