Child Is Father to the Man is keyboard player/singer/arranger Al Kooper's finest work, an album on which he moves the folk-blues-rock amalgamation of the Blues Project into even wider pastures, taking in classical and jazz elements (including strings and horns), all without losing the pop essence that makes the hybrid work. This is one of the great albums of the eclectic post-Sgt. Pepper era of the late '60s, a time when you could borrow styles from Greenwich Village contemporary folk to San Francisco acid rock and mix them into what seemed to have the potential to become a new American musical form. It's Kooper's bluesy songs, such as "I Love You More Than You'll Ever Know" and "I Can't Quit Her," and his singing that are the primary focus, but the album is an aural delight; listen to the way the bass guitar interacts with the horns on "My Days Are Numbered" or the charming arrangement and Steve Katz's vocal on Tim Buckley's "Morning Glory." Then Kooper sings Harry Nilsson's "Without Her" over a delicate, jazzy backing with flügelhorn/alto saxophone interplay by Randy Brecker and Fred Lipsius. This is the sound of a group of virtuosos enjoying itself in the newly open possibilities of pop music. Maybe it couldn't have lasted; anyway, it didn't.
(EXCERPT FROM AN ONLINE REVIEW BY WILLIAM RUHLMAN, ALL MUSIC GUIDE /ALLMUSIC.COM/)
Unbelievable!!! Unheard of!!! What we have here previously has been only rumored to exist and, to our best knowledge, is not listed in any price books or record catalogs: This is the legendary white label promo-MONO recording of this legendary jazz-rock/psych/fusion album from 1968.
This is the album which - for many people - introduced Rock to Jazz and vice versa (and Blood, Sweat and Tears to the world public as a potent force to be reckoned with). Unlike the subsequent BS+T albums, Al Kooper plays a critical role on this one, and what a role it is: you haven't heard a blues ballad unless and until you hear "I love you more than you'll ever know", a paean to a lost love, and the finest blues number EVER penned by the white man. The sound quality will leave you begging for more. The material on this album aged more gracefully than most of the other so-called jazz-rock albums (Chicago; Chase, etc). The most intriguing aspect of the album is its sequencing; namely, the songs, which range from BS&T’s version of Tim Buckley's "Morning Glory" (Later covered by Linda Ronstadt as "Hobo"), Randy Newman's "Just one smile" and Carole King's "So much love" mingle with a variety of other, vigorous and rocking B,S & T originals, to shape an album which flows seamlessly and effortlessly and operates like a conceptual album, in which each part plays its own, specific, unique role. This may be your last chance to own this classic album in its clearest, original, most coveted form. Track listing: Overture - I Love You More Than You'll Ever Know - Morning Glory - My Days Are Numbered - Without Her - Just One Smile - I Can't Quit Her - Meagan's Gypsy Eyes - Somethin' Goin' On - House In The Country - Modern Adventures Of Plato, Diogenes & Freud, The - So Much Love / Underture
THE WHITE LABEL PROMO, RADIO STATION-, AUDITION OR DEMONSTRATION COPIES AND RELEASES (such as the one we have here) were often distributed to the radio stations before the record was released to the public, sometimes as much as four months ahead. These records are generally considered to be the "first among equals": the VERY FIRST generation and the VERY FIRST pressings of the particular title; a PROTOTYPE and the earliest known official pressing of the record.

· CONDITION:
· RECORD
(IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded!; we grade records under the strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight)
(a) WE GRADE THE VINYL AS EXCELLENT. This is one of those albums that are somewhat difficult to grade. It is somewhere between VG++ and NEAR MINT, just a notch below NEAR MINT. A few light abrasions ARE visible, but they are extremely shallow, superficial and only moderately visually distracting (nothing significant). For the most part, the vinyl looks impeccable without any MAJOR visual flaws or imperfections. Much of the original luster is intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.
(b) The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!
(c) White label promo-only MONO pressing of this title is much rarer, and by far more preferable to its stereo counterpart. We think that the mix is more natural, humane, "organic" and that the mixes are somewhat different than on the stereo version. We estimate that stereo copies of this album outnumber mono pressings by a ratio of at least 200:1.
(d) Stock (commercially released) mono copies of this album are NOT known to exist.
· THE COVER
THE COVER IS NICE --- ABOUT VERY GOOD++ (VG++).
The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:
- Cover has a partially split spine (less than 1 inch / 2.5 centimeters)
- Cover has some visible fraying/tattering on the bottom seam and spine (nothing significant)
- Minor shelf wear noted on the top seam (nothing significant)
- Cover has some light ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and 10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 3
- Cover shows JUST A HINT of yellowing on both sides, apparently from aging.
- Cover has a few tiny wrinkles along the spine
- Cover has all four corners slightly worn / dinged / bent.
- Cover has a visible "wrinkle"(crease) in one of the corners.
NO OTHER VISIBLE FLAWS OR IMPERFECTIONS ON THE COVER
