Description

BLUE MITCHELL - DOWN WITH IT

A lovely copy of this rare and sought after original US 1st press jazz gem with wonderful MONO sound quality throughout

Year/Label : 1965 US Blue Note Label number : BNLP 4214 Matrix numbers : BNLP-4214.A, BNLP-4214.B with "VAN GELDER" and the Plastylite P "Ear" stamped into both run-off's
Solid very good plus (VG+) condition vinyl - weighty, completely flat and retaining a lovely jet black lacquered sheen. In daylight the condition of the vinyl comes across as virtually unmarked and it is only with close inspection under a bright light that a few paper scuff lines and tiny surface marks come into view on each side - all non-obvious, non-feelable, surface only, and appearing to be purely superficial and not impinging upon the impressive MONO sound quality.  Each label is excellent with the only blemishes being a few small and extremely faint spindle trails adjacent to the centre hole on each label. Note the "NEW YORK USA" text on each label, synonymous with first pressings.   A very good plus (VG+) condition original and iconic outer sleeve, complete with very 1st press "43 West 61st St., New York 23" horizontal text at the bottom of the reverse side of the sleeve. The sleeve is made from thick cardboard and remains in a fully functional and highly presentable state : it has rigid edges with some mild intermittent scuff marks on the bottom edge, nicely defined right-angled corners with just a little rubbing on each, firm opening edges with no fraying, and all colours, front photo, and reverse side text remain vibrant with excellent definition. There is just a little very mild ring wear on the front side towards the bottom edge, a very light yellowy stain/discolouration towards the middle of the reverse side, and again on the reverse side the track times have been written in blue biro. Do take a good look at my photos. Overall excellent (EX) MONO sound quality with no sticks, skips, repeats, distortion or rotational clicking (you may come across just two or three random clicks no-doubt caused by a speck or two of dust caught in the grooves through decades of storage), and any background crackle is at an absolute minimum - there are 2 or 3 very short passages on side 2 where there is just the faint hint of some very background crackle...nothing really. The sound quality is first rate - crystal clear MONO with jazz giants Blue Mitchell (trumpet), Junior Cook (tenor sax), Chick Corea (piano), Gene Taylor (bass), and Aloysius Foster (drums) each at the top of their game. A great listen!  Comes with very good plus (VG+) condition original "27 YEARS BLUE NOTE" inner sleeve with no seam splits, minimal creasing, some mild age discolouration, and a small tear on the top edge, and remaining fully functional. Note that I always ship the vinyl in a new plain white inner sleeve in order to protect the original.
These Blue Note 1st pressings are becoming so hard to find now, especially in condition as impressive as this and with such wonderful MONO sound quality.
