BLUE PHANTOM "distorsions"   ORIGINAL RELEASED 1971 SPIDER RECORDS STEREO PRESSING, CATALOG#. VSM 38543, MADE IN ITALY.   2014 REPRESS BY AMS   ONE OF GREATEST AND SOUGHT-AFTER HOLY GRAILS OF ITALIAN PROG./PSYCH EVER RELEASED. A TRUE LEGEND AMONG RECORD COLLECTORS AND ALMOST IMPOSSIBILE TO FIND IN ITS ORIGINAL EDITION, THIS RECORD REPRESENTS ONE OF THE TOP COLLECTIBLES AND RAREST LPs OF THE GENRE.   A common belief wants this album released as UK pressing from a UK band, in fact the record is known among european collectors. Actually this LP was pressed in Italy in 1971, together also with a single (even more rare) by a completely obscure studio band , and 1 year later pressed and distributed in England and other european countries. In Italy the album has been released by Spider label, owned by Vedette Records, and the tracks have been written by soundtracks composer Armando Sciascia under the pseudonym "H.Tical".   Totally instrumental and obscure, the album contains great influences of Psychedelic sounds from 1970s.   Superb tracks full of pathos: from the inctroductive "Diodo" to "Metamorphosis", from "Distillation" to "Violence", all balanced by more relaxing tracks that create a really excting and interesting musical dischotomy. We can't exclude this album released as a collection of LIbraries in order to be used for advertsing breaks or sonor utilization. This could be a resonable hypothesis considering that the album promotion totally missed. In UK and Europe the album was distributed with differt artwork, while in Italy was completely unknown, and represents one the rarest collectible items in whole record marketplace.   Occasionally the material moves in a more keyboard based Italian film direction, but even then the drums are pushing it into the heavy rock zone, & the keys are distorted enough that if you didn’t know Sciascia had composed this, you probably wouldn’t make the connection, especially since this type of thing falls in line with the still relatively nascent & not yet solidified Prog realm of the time. “Distortions” is apt enough as a title – the guitars are heavily fuzzed, as are the occasional keys, as mentioned. Occasionally this moves into a stranger, less obvious territory – the closer “Psycho-Nebulous” gets into a creepy, almost proto-Devo thing. This is definitely one of those exploitation records which soars way above its supposed station in life to a much higher place. And this is an entirely different take on prog than what was soon to be the normal Italian m.o. of Vivaldi rock – “Distortions” is basically Trogladytic at heart, despite low level composerly moves. An unlikely convergence producing fantastic results – pure pleasure, front to back.
