Label Conditions: Both very clean, incredibly fresh and attractive with only light and faint spindle marks and no wear around the hole area. Indeed, side one has barely a spindle mark to be seen at all

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Rarity: Quite rare: most seen are US pressings, few were pressed in the UK and fewer will survive with such a wonderful clean record.

Brief Info: A debut psych band that was called ‘Psychedelic Lollipop’ within their native America. Theuy were one of the very first acts to use the word psychedelic for their music. Many of these garage psych acts never saw issue in the UK, but clearly Fontana thought they had enough potential to do so. It remained their only UK issue until 1971 and it has always been an elusive one to find. One of the finest within this genre and a much sort-after title by fans. Although the cover back has aged a little with some track personalising by the original owner on the age-toned back, the record is quite exceptional and has clearly been little played. A very few light surface marks apart (with no sound), this fantastic ultimate first pressing offers wonderful crisp and clear mono sound. For the few who purchased this from issue time, most played them substantially on the heavy-tracking equipment of the day, only small numbers will survive this clean and it’s not one I have seen many times before – this is terrific record.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT: or very close to. Averaged out over the different areas, this I feel is a correct grading. A single format with front laminate, this wraps around the closed edges on to three rear external flipbacks, the spine being massive. Printed and made in England with the correct TL mono cover.

Lamination & Front: The front looks fantastic, only lightly aged with some laminate dulling around the rim seen more under light. With super-clean and fresh looking artwork enjoyed through clear and shiny laminate, this has survived all these years with barely a crease to be seen and all is fully adhered. The only small wear on the bottom left corner.

Cover Back: The back has aged more with some darkening to the matt main panel. More toning to the left edge and here the original owner has listed side one and side two against the numbers tracks of side one. Clearly writing on covers is an issue for some collectors but here is reasonably unobtrusive and quite neat. A few light marks but no ringwear or creasing. All the flipbacks are neat and undamaged with clean ends which remain practically free of burring. A small chip bottom left but few creases and even still shiny.

Top Edge: Odd tiny tone spot or surface chip, barely any real wear.

Bottom Edge: Similar with rubs on the corner tips.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Solid and quite sharp with little wear and no feathering or trimming. Record enters on this edge.

Spine and Text: Solid, quite straight but thin, possibly compressed. All text is perfect and unworn under the solid laminate that again has some small tone spots.

Corners: All corners have rubbed ranging from light to moderate. Fine or better shape is largely retained.

Cover Summary: A strong all-round example of this seldom seen UK mid-60’s cover, one that will prove difficult to find much better. This still very attractive item should please many collectors, but the back will short for the more discerning. If the writing is an issue, do not bid.

The Inner Sleeve: This vintage record came to me with a very heavy-duty polylined white inner. If this is the original or not, I am not sure in this case. It certainly looks right for it’s era and vintage and is only slightly aged again with some toning and mild grubbiness. The window circles are near perfect, crisp and sharp and the thick lining is very clear and uncreased. All edges secure with barely a crease to be seen.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT: and a strong excellent too. Just a few very light surface marks that have no sound at all, I for one, would be more than happy to find all 1960s mono records this clean and little used – and offering such fine quality sound. A lovely visual copy that is very clean, shiny, intense black and very solidly pressed. A copy with minimal plays on all the evidence. Visually a super record that should please many, if not most collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This early US psych record plays even above it’s high visual grading with nothing to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and no pops or clicks were noted and this is an exceptional clean pressing. Few copies will outperform this ultimate first pressing significantly I feel sure. Just imagine what this could have been subjected too and sound like these days. Both channels are clean and sharp, focused and clear and nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. This copy will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

The record’s cover will be placed within a BRAND NEW soft protective sleeve and the actual record will be professionally cleaned on my new VPI-17 Pro vacuum system to give ultimate clean grooves and playing surfaces and the best possible looks and ultimate sound quality. You will NOT get tired, dull looking, dust infested records inside worn and foggy covers with tatty inners from this seller and that’s a promise and guarantee. All records are posted in professional boxes (NOT Mailers, these do not offer any real protection). The record(s) are REMOVED from their main cover to avoid edge splits and placed within a brand new polylined inner. The record’s original inner will be included if available. SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
