Label/Format: CBS – very early format with rough textured surfaces and the 33 speed indicator. The textured surfaces are from rim to rim, so total. Most have the 33 1/3 speed indicator, only the earliest examples have just 33. (Please see my label scans).

Label Conditions: Both look gorgeous: very clean with intense orange freshness. Any spindle traces are very few, fine and faint, all quite amazing for any popular record this great age. It appears very little played and offers very clean mono sound with little unwanted.

Cat Number: BPG 62022.

Mode / Speed: Mono / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 170 grams. A turntable crunching weight and few standard records ever achieve anything like it. Almost a freak pressing weight for a CBS record, quite possibly the heaviest I have ever held.

Rarity: The very early pressings of this landmark folk album are rare, and with records this clean, even more so. We all know, and I have stated on countless number of my adverts, what these old mono albums were likely to have been subjected too. Thick, often blunt or worn-out stylus that tracked at massive weights (10 grams was considered optimum and normal), rarely aligned and set-up with anyout any due care. Resulting in damaged, shredded groove walls and now with appalling, noisy, unfocused sound. How many records this incredible age will still sound impressive on a highly revealing stereo sound system? One arm drop from such an old record player and there’s another deep scratch or crator that wrote-off so many of these completely. We have all seen and heard such copies and being totally acoustic, this album has nowhere to hide unless of the highest quality. This landmark album has survived practically all the perils of the early 60s, it looks and sounds lovely and is more than at home inside little worn cover. Do not underestimate just how hard such early records are to find like this, in mono especially. And special mention again of the sheer weight of this copy – 170 grams is very heavy indeed for a standard pressing even by 1960s standards.

Brief Info: A legendary release from way back in 1962, it’s almost scary to ponder just how old this album actually is. Without any doubt, this is one of landmark albums of all-time and not just within the folk genre. Including just two self-written songs and the rest quality folk standards all given the Zimmerman treatment. The surprise I guess is the lack of chart success in his native US where it failed to even enter. Whereas in the UK, it made a very respectable No. 13. Purely acoustic folk, less than worthy copies can hide no audio blemishes, and glad to state this very early mono record hardly needs to. This appears little played and no damaging old stylus have inflicted any wear to these clean fine sounding grooves. The hidden hazard of groove wear resulting in distortion simply has NOT happened on this one and delighted to state the fact. The sound of this legendary recording still fully intact with any surface sound minimal, very infrequent and faint. I have seldom seen this vintage folk classic better.

Cover Grade and Format: NEAR EXCELLENT: a single format with front laminate that wraps around the three closed edges to three external rear flipbacks. Printed and made in England with no credits.

Lamination & Front: The laminate retains fine shine and freshness and clarity with no lifting with minimal traces of dulling seen under angled light. A few creases mostlhy confined to the edges with just a few gentle half moons away from that show little viewed straight-on. A little small wear or creasing to the corner tips but not a great deal else.

Cover Back: The main matt unprotected back panel has darkened a little over time with a little gentle grubbiness near the left edge. Any creasing, few and very light and no ring wear or rubbing. All three flipbacks are solid and sound being clean with no end burring or grubbiness. A few laminate creases are rarely avoided entirely.

Top Edge: Practically as made and fully laminated which has remained totally scuff free and straight, just a small rub on the left corner tip.

Bottom Edge: As above with rubs on the corner tips.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean and quite sharp with minimal traces of any wear and guaranteed untrimmed. Slightly thickened seen viewed end-on but with no real burring or thumb creasing. Record enters on this edge.

Spine and Text: Solid, straight, uncompressed, with just a few tiny hints of scuffing. All text is perfect and unworn under the solid and uncracked laminate that has no peeling and is very clear. Again a little rubbing to the very ends.

Corners: The top pair have only small rubs and retain very fine shape. The bottom left has a slightly large rub, it’s opposite has a smallish tip dink, rub and is less solid. When you consider this very small tip blemish as the most significant wear on such a cover, it should put into context just how fine it is overall.

Cover Summary: An attractive all-round example of this famous early 60’s cover, one that will prove difficult to find much better. Just enough to remind of it’s considerable vintage and era, but it should please many collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(++): a polylined inner sleeve with no mention of stereo at all, it is British patented with ‘Foreign patents pending’ text. Both window circles are immaculate and the lining very clear. A little fairly gentle crinkle only and all edges unsplit with no repairs. This has aged little being clean with any darkening very light.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT: with any surface marks few, light and faint as mostly seen under bright angled light. No penetrating scratches and the quite fine grooves have an interesting pattern. Clearly these could be so easily damaged and it hardly bares thinking about a massive weight Dansette arms grinding it’s way across such a fragile record. A few minor marks yes, but they are purely superficial and it has more than survived the perilous era well.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This super-heavyweight record plays even above it’s high visual grading with very little to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, never take this for granted on this or any mono record, especially one so delicate and old. All frequencies are sharp, clear and fully focused - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound, the legend of Dylan could almost be in the room performing for you. Any surface sounds are minimal and very faint and no pops or or significant clicks were noted and this is an exceptional clean pressing. Few of the really early examples will match or outperform this vintage pressing I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played only lightly and has been generally well stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. This copy will prove difficult to find better and even matching it will prove a challenge, this merits strong recommendation.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
